An advocacy NGO known as the International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights has berated Governor Nyesom Wike and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Okon Effiong, for not showing seriousness in tackling the spate of political violence in the state.
Ahead of the February 25 and March 11 national and state elections, Rivers State had witnessed several politically motivated attacks on candidates, supporters, party secretariats, and campaign materials.
The Chancellor of the NGO, Omenasu Jackson, told our correspondent that the governor, who some time ago drove to the premises of a serving judge and prevented the judge from being arrested by security agents, is expected to do more in curb political violence in the state.
He said, “most of those accused to have had hands in the political violence in the state are loyalists and allies of Wike, and the governor seems to be keeping quiet about it.
“The governor has the power as the chief security officer of the state to fish out the perpetrators of political violence in the state.
“Unfortunately, the governor is not showing the required seriousness to curb political violence in the state.”
Jackson also said that the body language of the state commissioner of police does not show the readiness to deal with political violence.
He, therefore, urged the CP to up his game, station his men at strategic places in the state, and improve his intelligence networks.
According to the NGO Chancellor, the perpetrators of previous election violence are still walking freely on the streets of the state.
He added that crime will only reduce when criminals are sure of being punished for any crime they commit.
