In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a meticulously planned raid on several nightclubs in Akure, Ondo State, resulting in the arrest of 127 individuals suspected of being involved in internet fraud. This operation, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, puts to focus, the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes and cyber fraud in Nigeria.

A statement posted on the EFCC’s official X handle confirmed the details of the raid and the subsequent arrests. “Credible intelligence showed that the alleged party was initially scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, 2024, but was later moved to Saturday to beat security and intelligence networks of the EFCC,” the statement read. This revelation highlights the dynamic and adaptive nature of criminal networks and the continuous need for vigilance and intelligence-led operations by law enforcement agencies.

“The alleged internet fraudsters were apprehended during an early morning sting operation at a ‘Yahoo Party’ hosted simultaneously at Signature and Abah Clubs on Saturday, June 8, 2024, in Akure, Ondo State,” Oyewale detailed. “The rescheduling of the party from Wednesday to Saturday was a strategic move by the suspects, but our operatives had been tracking their activities closely, leading to a successful operation.”

The suspects are currently being held at the EFCC’s Ibadan office, where they are undergoing profiling and interrogation.
EFCC recovered a substantial haul of items believed to be proceeds of illegal activities, like cars, gadgets and numerous incriminating documents.

Though the EFCC’s efforts have been widely commended, with many praising the agency for its proactive measures and the successful execution of the raid, people have come out with evidential posts via social media, to tell untold parts of the incident.

On social media platform X, users shared videos showing EFCC officers allegedly assaulting individuals, including innocent bystanders and security staff. One user posted footage of the raid, depicting EFCC officers leaving the club while firing sporadically. According to the post, the officers destroyed the club and hotel rooms, forcibly broke into rooms, and damaged the CCTV and the engine. A groom celebrating his bachelor’s party with friends, was among those innocently caught up in the arrests and taken away by the officers.

An eyewitness described a chaotic scene at the nightclubs, where officers used tear gas and physical force, resulting in numerous injuries, including to security personnel. The officers reportedly indiscriminately tear-gassed and beat people, injuring many, including security guards.

Another user on X uploaded a video showing the alleged mistreatment of women at a club. The video claimed that officers dehumanized innocent women and confiscated their phones. The user shared this to expose what they saw as the unprofessional and irresponsible behavior of the agency.
