CSO knocks police for tear gassing gov Fubara

Civil Society Organisation in Rivers State has condemned the tear gassing of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the police, insisting it will challenge further harassment of the governor.

Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman of CSO in the state, Ene-faa Georgewill urged the state lawmakers to serve their constituents, not their political godfather.

His words: “We condemn the tear gassing of the governor by the police. The action of the police is shameless. The police should have only come in when there is a breakdown of law and order and we do not see the governor’s presence at the Assembly complex as a breakdown of law and order.

“And as a civil society organization, we are going to challenge any further harassment on the governor.

“The law spelled out how to impeach a governor, the procedure is there. This means one can not just wake up from the side of his or her bed and remove a sitting governor.

“What is disturbing to us as civil society organization in the state is that this impeachment plot is being masterminded by the current Minister of FCT and we are urging the lawmakers not to allow themselves to be used for dirty politics.

“The lawmakers should be loyal to their constituents, not to any political godfather.

“Before now, we haven’t heard any form of misconduct by Governor Fubara, and before impeaching a governor, there must be a grievous misconduct which we have not heard and yet they want to impeach the governor.

“We have to say that the Assembly especially the speaker should be very cautious of his actions.”
