IYC gets new national leadership

By Brave Dickson

The Ijaw Youth Council has elected new members to pilot the affairs of its national leadership.

The election which took place on Saturday in Bayelsa State amid tight security saw the emergence of Jonathan Lokpobiri as its national president.

Lokpobiri polled a total of 47 votes to defeat his closest contender, Pogonyo who scored 27 votes, while Ebilade came third with 11 votes.

Speaking with our correspondent shortly after the election, one of the participants and Chairman of IYC Kalabari Se – Ikpangi, Comrade Edward Asikitams described the election as free and fair.

He added that if the process wasn’t transparent, the security agents assigned for the election wouldn’t have been able to contain the rancour that would have broken out.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected national president promised to address the problem of disunity which he said has dragged the ijaws backward for too long.
