Father Mbaka Urges Equal Pay for Governors and Lawmakers, Warns Against Civil Unrest

In the midst of a nationwide debate over minimum wage, Father Ejike Mbaka, the outspoken Catholic priest and spiritual director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), has called for fairness and equality in remuneration for Nigerian workers. Expressing concern over the plight of the masses amidst economic hardships, Father Mbaka has issued a stern warning against escalating tensions, urging President Tinubu to consider the repercussions of ignoring the demands of the labour force.

Father Mbaka’s impassioned plea comes at a critical juncture as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) continue negotiations with the federal government regarding a new minimum wage. The recent offer of N62,000 by President Tinubu’s administration has sparked mixed reactions, with Nigerian governors resisting the proposal, citing financial constraints.

In an exclusive interview with AIT on Saturday, June 8, Father Mbaka reiterated his stance, advocating for parity in wages across all sectors of government. He emphasized that governors, senators, and members of the House of Representatives should also be subject to the proposed N62,000 minimum wage, emphasizing the principle of fairness and equity.

Highlighting the potential consequences of neglecting the grievances of the labour force, Father Mbaka warned against the possibility of civil unrest. Reflecting on recent protests that disrupted airport operations, he expressed apprehension about the growing discontent among Nigerians, cautioning against pushing the populace to the brink of rebellion.

Furthermore, Father Mbaka condemned the disparity in earnings between public officials and ordinary citizens, denouncing the lavish allowances and privileges enjoyed by politicians. He questioned the morality of accumulating wealth at the expense of the masses, urging for a systemic overhaul to address systemic inequality.

Quoting Father Mbaka directly, he stated: “If we decide to give labour N60,000 or N62,000, why not generalize it to the house of assembly members, senatorial members, house of representative members, and governors? All of them are civil servants. So, are the others slaves? I cannot imagine why somebody can be amassing billions and billions as sitting allowance, wardrobe allowance, newspaper allowance, vehicle allowance and what they call suffering allowance.”

Experts have weighed in on Father Mbaka’s assertions, acknowledging the merit of his arguments while cautioning against the complexities of implementing such reforms. Dr. Adebayo Johnson, an economist, emphasized the importance of addressing income inequality to foster social cohesion and economic stability. He stressed the need for comprehensive policies that prioritize the welfare of all citizens, including public servants.

However, Dr. Johnson also highlighted the practical challenges associated with equalizing wages across government ranks, citing budgetary constraints and administrative hurdles. He proposed a nuanced approach that balances the aspirations of workers with the fiscal realities of governance, advocating for dialogue and compromise to reach a sustainable solution.

In response to Father Mbaka’s statements, government officials have reiterated their commitment to engaging with labour unions to find a mutually acceptable resolution. Senator Aisha Abdullahi, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity, affirmed the government’s willingness to address the concerns of workers while emphasizing the need for fiscal prudence.

Senator Abdullahi emphasized the importance of striking a balance between meeting the demands of labour and ensuring the fiscal sustainability of government operations. She pledged to work collaboratively with stakeholders to reach a consensus that prioritizes the welfare of Nigerian workers without compromising the nation’s economic stability.

Labour’s Stands on Minimum Wage May Continue Indefinite Strike

Tommy Okon Etim, the deputy president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), emphasized the importance of following due process in the quest for a new national minimum wage in Nigeria. Etim, during an interview, revealed that discussions within the labour sector are imminent to deliberate on the federal government’s recent proposal of N62,000. He clarified that while the organized labour is not fixated on figures, they prioritize the value it represents for workers.

Despite the agreement between the Bola Tinubu-led government and the organized private sector on a N62,000 minimum wage, the organized labour has stood firm, advocating for N250,000. This difference has heightened tensions, potentially reactivating the suspended indefinite strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), according to reports.

Criticism has been directed towards Nigerian governors by the organized labour for their opposition to the proposed minimum wage. The suspension of the strike action, which lasted for five days, concludes today, Sunday, June 9. The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) expressed concerns over the sustainability of the proposed wage, drawing a sharp rebuke from labour unions. Tommy Etim, the deputy national president of the TUC, labeled the NGF’s stance as a catalyst for industrial unrest, stressing the need for governors to fulfill their obligations to workers and any of the state governors who will not comply should resign.

Etim highlighted discrepancies in the wealth distribution among governors, citing instances where vast sums were available yet claims of inability to meet wage demands were made.
“In this same country, the governors said that N30,000 was too much for governors to pay but it is in same country that a governor emerged with over 80bn. What an irony” He emphasized the importance of adherence to due process and expressed optimism in the outcome of discussions, stating, “We are giving Mr President the benefit of the doubt to walk the talk. The end will justify the means.”

The president of the TUC, Festus Osifo, rejected N60,000 and demanded a N250,000 minimum wage, aligning it with the prevailing economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers. The commitment of organized labour to championing the rights and welfare of workers remains unwavering, with a firm stance against any form of intimidation.

Bukar Goni Aji, chairperson of the tripartite committee on the national new minimum wage, disclosed plans to forward both the N62,000 and N250,000 recommendations to President Tinubu for further action.

Yvonne Jegede Reveals Reason For Divorcing Ex Husband

In a candid discussion featured in the teaser for an upcoming episode of ‘The Honest Bunch podcast, Jegede shared her reflections on the marriage and the factors that led to its dissolution. She expressed regret over choosing love over financial security, a choice she now questions in light of her experiences.

Jegede, known for her roles in popular Nigerian films, confirmed in 2019 that her marriage to fellow actor Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole had ended, barely a year after their wedding.

The popular Nollywood actress, Yvonne Jegede, has opened up about the reasons behind her decision to end her marriage, revealing that financial strain and issues of respect played significant roles, and Jegede recounted that her ex-husband often perceived her jokes as disrespectful, largely due to their age difference.

However, the primary reason for the breakup was financial imbalance. Jegede revealed that she was the main financial provider in the marriage, a role that added immense pressure and strain. She explained by saying, “The real issue was that I was the primary financial contributor. I’m taking care of my son as if no one else exists around me. It’s not easy. I should have chosen money over love.”

Reflecting on her choice, Jegede emphasized the challenges of being a primary caregiver and breadwinner. “It’s tough when you’re the one bringing in most of the money and also taking care of a child. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that, and it can be overwhelming,” she said. This insight resonates with many single parents and those in financially imbalanced relationships.

APC Membe Hints Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s Re-Election in 2027

In Rivers State, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sir Joe Korka-Waadah, has announced ongoing efforts to position Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the consensus candidate for re-election in the 2027 gubernatorial race. Korka-Waadah highlighted concerns regarding former Governor Nyesom Wike’s conduct towards Fubara, revealing that these issues have sparked the formation of a new political movement within the state.

Korka-Waadah expressed that the emergence of this movement is a direct response to Wike’s numerous political missteps and overbearing behavior. This new political force, he said, has united stakeholders from various political backgrounds, including previously antagonistic factions and politically inactive individuals, who now aim to rescue the state from entrenched political dominance.

According to Korka-Waadah, there is a strong possibility that Rivers State could see a unified front in the 2027 elections, with most political parties potentially consolidating their structures behind a single candidate. He suggested that Governor Fubara is likely to be this unifying figure, given his effective leadership and governance.

Governor Fubara, he noted, has demonstrated commendable qualities, including tact, humility, open-mindedness, and magnanimity, in navigating the challenges of his position. His policies reflect prudent, selfless, and transparent management of the state’s resources, with an equitable focus on developmental projects across Rivers State. These attributes, according to Korka-Waadah, have positioned Fubara as a governor for all citizens, contrasting with the past eight years of governance.

Amidst ongoing consultations and discussions aimed at harmonizing political interests, Korka-Waadah emphasized that Fubara is emerging as the favored choice among stakeholders. He stressed the urgency of this political shift, arguing that Rivers State has long suffered under national political power brokers who exploit its resources while fostering division. The time, he concluded, has come to end this detrimental narrative and unite for the state’s future.
