A suspected member of a fake employment syndicate, Kelvin Akaa, was arrested in Port Harcourt by Officers of the Choba Police Division on 13 Saturday, May 2023.

Our Correspondent gathered that the suspect impersonated a University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) staff to defraud unsuspecting members of the public of their hard-earned money with an assurance of employment in the hospital.

In an interview with our Correspondent, a victim of the fraud Nsongurua Dan said she met the suspect while doing her business, who then told her of the vacancy in UPTH.

“I was doing my business when I met him; he told me there was a vacancy at UPTH, and he asked me to bring a certain amount of money that the management would require I pay some money before I would be given an appointment letter.

“I paid four hundred and ten thousand (410,000) naira; after the payment, I did not hear from him again for a long time, only for me to meet him on 13 May 2023, at the premise of Abuja Campus University of Port Harcourt.

“So I called the attention of the Sheriff at UNIPORT, and the Sheriff notified the Policemen at Choba Police Station that was how he was apprehended.

“At the Police station, the Officers informed me there is a similar case against the suspect, that other victims are also looking for him”.

The Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe Koko, when contacted, confirmed the arrest of Kelvin Akaa.

She said an investigation is ongoing as the suspect is giving helpful information to the Police.
