A man has been killed during a council election between David Osarobe, Tobiah Silas Tete and Samuel Owinkpe in Onne community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
It was gathered that the victim, Victor Amasi, a youth leader, was shot dead on Monday, by a security personnel in the area.
It was also learnt that the suspect is one of the police officers deployed to ensure a peaceful electoral process in the area, but the election was later suspended by the electoral committee after receiving orders from authorities in the area.
An eyewitness account said the suspension was said to have triggered unrest, leading to a “protest to the traditional leaders” of the community.
However, the leaders, after considering circumstances, declared David Osarobe as the winner, which led to wild jubilation “during which a stray bullet from the security personnel hit Amasi who died on his way to the hospital,” the account added.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command through its spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko has debunked the report that its officer was involved in the mishap.
According to her, “they were fighting among themselves and there were other security agencies including the DSS, Army and Civil Defence there, so police did not shoot.”
