Nigeria as a developing country is not a very safe place to visit especially when you are visiting for the first time. This is because of the high rate of crime such as kidnapping,ritual killing,internet fraud,sexual abuse and so on.So, it is advisable that as a tourist or foreigner, you need to travel with a Nigerian friend or visit such a friend in order to enjoy your stay to the fullest without having to sleep with one eye open.
One of the recommended cities you can go to when you are coming or in Nigeria is Abuja. This is because as the capital territory of the country, it houses mostly dignitaries and politicians, so as a result, it has a high level of security compared to other parts of the country like Lagos where the level of crime is high.
Be very cautious when travelling by road especially at night, this is because it is the time when most highway robbers operate, so, it is advisable you travel via air or make your road travel in the morning.
The Niger-Delta area of the country is highly unsafe for foreigners and the reason is because of the battle between the militants and the federal government concerning oil pollution in their communities, so this has led to the kidnapping of most foreign oil workers.
The Northern part of Nigeria is notorious for its religious and ethnic clashes which has lead to the destruction of lives and properties by the Islamist group known as Boko Haram.
The Eastern and Western part of the country is at least 60% safe for tourists/foreigners but there is also the problem of robbery and pick pocketing.
Be aware that flowing rivers in some part of the country particularly the South, is notorious for sea pirates.
For the LGBT tourists, be very careful when you visit Nigeria, this is because the Nigerian constitution is totally against homosexualism and anyone caught in the act will be jailed for 14 years while in the Northern part, acts like public display of affection by same gender can lead to public execution.
