Edo Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is seeking the immediate suspension of the Former Rivers State Government, Nyesom Wike amid internal conflict within the state.

The party has been facing infighting, with ever-growing discontent amongst party members since February 22, 2024, which is the date for the governorship primary election, an election that produced Asue Ighodalo as the governorship candidate.

Aggrieved members of the Peoples’ Democratic party in Edo state subsequently took legal action as 378 delegates were excluded from the primaries. Last week, Justice Inyang Ekwo invalidated the primary in the case FHC/ABJ/CS/165/2024, owing to the previously mentioned exclusion. The PDP appealed this verdict on Wednesday.

As a result, the National Working Committee of the People Democratic Party suspended Chief Dan Orbih,  its National Vice Chairman (South-South), for allegedly sabotaging the party’s goals in the state. The national Vice chairman is a known ally of the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

A member of the party’s National Working Committee who would only comment on the basis of anonymity, because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, accused the FCT minister of being behind the party’s terrible ordeal in Edo State.

The source stated “We are deeply concerned, and the party leadership shares this concern, that some members are attempting to sabotage the party in Edo State.

“Dan Orbih and the former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, are not acting alone. They are working in tandem with Nyesom Wike. The FCT Minister is doing everything possible to undermine the Governor of Edo, Godwin Obaseki, and pave the way for the APC to take control.

“Eerily similar to the situation in Rivers State, the PDP leadership is aware that Wike is the one funding and fueling all the crises within the party in Edo State. It is high time the party took a firm stand on this issue and suspended Wike as well.”

The PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, in an interview, affirmed that the party leadership remains undeterred and committed to ensuring the success of its candidate.
