A talented contingent of 23 Nigerian athletes, proudly led by flagbearer Lauritta Onye, will join forces with top competitors from around the globe, vying for medals in an impressive array of 549 events spread across 22 sports.

The Nigerian team, comprising a diverse and talented group of athletes, is gearing up to make a significant impact at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. The contingent boasts a strong representation across four sports: athletics (5 athletes), badminton (2 athletes), powerlifting (9 athletes), and table tennis (8 athletes). Supported by a dedicated team of 7 coaches and 5 medical professionals, the Nigerian athletes are well-equipped to tackle the challenges ahead and strive for podium finishes. With their sights set on glory, they are determined to make their country proud and showcase their skills on the world stage.

Nigeria boasts an impressive legacy of success in the Paralympic Games, having accumulated a remarkable 80 medals since its inaugural participation in 1992. This impressive haul comprises 40 gold medals, symbolizing the pinnacle of athletic achievement, 19 silver medals, representing a testament to the athletes’ dedication and perseverance, and 21 bronze medals, signifying a commendable display of skill and sportsmanship. This outstanding medal count is a reflection of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to excellence in Paralympic sports, cementing its position as a formidable force on the international stage.

Starkly contrasting with Nigeria’s modest Olympic medal count of 27 since 1952, the nation’s Paralympic athletes have impressively accumulated 80 medals, showcasing their exceptional talent and dedication. The 2024 Paris Paralympics, running until September 8, offer a prime opportunity for these athletes to shine and reclaim Nigeria’s sporting glory, following a disappointing medal-less performance at the recent Paris Olympics. The focus now shifts to this remarkable group of Paralympians, poised to compete for medals and restore national pride.

Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has urged Team Nigeria to make a bold statement of excellence and determination at the 2024 Paralympic Games, as the world’s top para-athletes converge in Paris. Senator Enoh emphasized that the Paralympic Games present a significant chance for Nigeria to seek redemption and reclaim its pride on the global stage, underscoring the importance of this momentous occasion.

“Paris 2024 is not just another sporting event; it’s an opportunity for Team Nigeria to show the world what we are capable of. Our athletes have trained hard, and they are prepared to give their best performance. We are here to compete, to win, and to bring glory to Nigeria,” Enoh said in a signed statement by his Special Assistant media, Diana-Mary Nsan.  

With a formidable team of 35 athletes, expert coaches, and dedicated medical personnel, Team Nigeria is poised to make a significant impact at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. From August 28th to September 8th, the team will showcase their exceptional skills in four highly competitive sports: para-athletics, para-badminton, para powerlifting, and para table tennis. Senator John Owan Enoh, Minister of Sports Development, expressed his unshakeable confidence in the athletes, highlighting their past achievements and future potential. “Nigeria’s para-athletes have consistently inspired and made our nation proud,” he stated. “I have every confidence that they will once again excel in Paris, surpassing expectations and bringing home a multitude of medals. We stand united in our support for them, and we are eager to celebrate their triumphs.” Senator Enoh’s words underscore the nation’s high hopes for its para-athletes, who are ready to take on the world’s best and make their mark on the global stage.
