Senate Passes Bill Approving 300 Percent Salary Increase For Judicial Officers At Both The Federal And State Levels.

The Bill Was Transmitted To The National Assembly By President Bola Tinubu For Consideration And Passage.

The bill approved by the senators was a consequence of a report by the Senate Committee on Justice, Human Rights and Legal Affairs, which was presented by the Chairman, Senator Mohammed Monguno, APC, Borno North.

In his presentation, Monguno, who noted that stakeholders unanimously supported the passage of the bill during a public hearing, said the purpose of the bill is sacred to the judicial reform initiative of the current administration.

According to him, the bill was in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the rules of the Senate.

He said: “The bill is relevant and timely, considering the current economic reality and the high inflation of the country, an increase in the salaries of judges is long overdue.

“The bill was ‘quite’ innovative, in addition to raising the basic salary, the judiciary was also considered with certain peculiarities of the administrative structure and functioning

“In general, the bill, if approved, will create an appropriate and proportional compensation that ensures the independence and integrity of. judges.

“Undoubtedly, an adequate salary allows judges to focus on their professional development without worrying about financial constraints; thus, it improves their professionalism and judgment.

“That fair compensation for judicial officers is crucial to maintaining public. Confidence in the impartiality and integrity of judges.
Adequate compensation to judges is a sign of society’s commitment to their important role in administering justice. .”

Monguno, argued that increasing judges’ salaries has become necessary to attract and retain highly qualified and experienced professionals with the necessary skills, knowledge, and integrity to serve on the bench, adding: “Certainly, if the bill is taken. , it will give retired police officers financial security and allow them to enjoy retirement. said the increase is written into the 2024 Appropriation Act.
