The theft of a sacrificial ram belonging to the Chief Imam of Mista Ali community in Plateau State’s Bassa Local Government Area has sparked outrage and concern, highlighting the broader economic challenges and moral decay facing the country. The incident occurred on the eve of Eid al-Adha celebrations, a significant religious holiday.

Malam Haruna Yaqub, another Imam in the community, condemned the theft during his sermon, emphasizing its insensitivity and religious significance. “The Ram of our Chief Imam, which he purposely brought to sacrifice, has been stolen in the night. We are really shocked by the incident. We were surprised to hear this story,” Yaqub lamented. He continued the sermon by reminding the congregation that everyone would be accountable for their actions both in this life and in the hereafter.

He expressed concern over the community’s moral decay, stating, “This means that people are not God-fearing. It is scary that people have gone to the extent of stealing a ram meant for religious activity.” Yaqub urged the community to be God-fearing and refrain from engaging in theft or criminal activities.

“It is high time people repented of their sins and took the path of Allah. It is not too late. People should stop committing bad things and act according to Allah’s commandments,” he urged.

X users took to social media to highlight broader economic challenges facing the nation, where poverty and desperation may drive individuals to commit such crimes. Some believe the theft of a sacrificial ram, a symbol of religious devotion, highlights the need for community members to reflect on their values and priorities. While others shared Yaqub emphasis on the need for the community to come together to promote a culture of respect, empathy, and God-fearing values to address some of the underlying issues driving such incidents.
