Gernot Rohr, head coach of Benin Republic, has acknowledged that Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be coming with vengeance on their minds when both teams meet this Saturday. The showdown will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, as part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Benin Republic caused a stir back in June when they stunned the Super Eagles with a 2-1 victory during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Now, Nigeria is eager for payback.
Rohr, however, is well aware of the challenge ahead. “Nigeria is not a conquered territory, far from it. We beat Nigeria three months ago; they will certainly have a spirit of revenge, which can be important—and that is normal,” Rohr said.

He pointed out that the Super Eagles will be much stronger this time around, with key players back in action. “They did not have certain players who are there now: Ekong, the captain, Osimhen, who will be there this time—he was not there last time. And behind, they have contributions, Ola Aina is there. It’s going to be a stronger team than the one we beat in June in Abidjan. We are wary. In addition, at home, they must achieve a result now after a series of draws or even defeats.”
Meanwhile, the Cheetahs will have to make do without their reliable defender, Mohamed Tijani, for Saturday’s game. Tijani, 27, sprained his ankle during training this week. Although efforts are being made to ensure his recovery, he’s expected to be out until Benin’s next fixture against Libya.
Kickoff for the highly anticipated clash is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 7.
