Nigerian superstar Rema is back with another banger! Fresh off the critical acclaim for his debut album “Rave & Roses,” he’s unleashed a brand new project, “HEIS.” This 11-track album marks a significant shift for the “Rave Lord,” showcasing his ambition, artistic growth, and a deeper dive into his Afrobeats roots.

“HEIS,” which means “one” in Greek, feels like a major milestone for Rema. It’s the album where he fully embraces the crown fans have placed on him: the “Prince of Afrobeats.” Tracks like “Soundgasm,” his unforgettable verse on the “Soweto” remix, and the global smash “Calm Down” with Selena Gomez cemented his place at the forefront of the genre.

But “HEIS” isn’t just about reliving past glories. Here, Rema pushes boundaries and experiments with a wilder, more intense sound. The overall vibe remains euphoric and electrifying, but with an underlying raw energy that reflects his artistic growth.

While venturing into uncharted sonic territory, Rema stays true to his Afrobeats foundation. Tracks like “HEIS” and “March Am” see him revisiting classic Afrobeats elements, drawing inspiration from the legendary Fela Kuti’s percussive intensity. This foundation is then layered with modern influences: 80s synth, trap, EDM, and even amapiano. The result? A truly global sonic tapestry.

This fusion of past and present gives birth to a sound Rema himself has dubbed “Afro-Rave.” “HEIS” bursts with some of his most audacious lyrics yet, with tracks like “HeHeHe” serving as powerful declarations of his artistic dominance.

The album also features some heartwarming hometown love. “Benin Boys,” the lead single featuring fellow Benin native Shallipopi, is an anthemic ode to their shared city. This track shattered records on Spotify, securing the second biggest opening day streams for a Nigerian song on the platform.

Other highlights include the electrifying “March Am,” produced by P Priime. This sonic rollercoaster is fueled by heavy drums and exhilarating car sounds. “Villain,” also by P Priime, takes a surprising turn, starting with a sample of Lana Del Rey’s “A & W” before morphing into a wild Afro-EDM fusion.

“Yayo” is a guaranteed earworm, a psychedelic explosion brimming with youthful energy and brazen lyricism. The title track, “HEIS,” is a hair-raising inauguration song, featuring celestial choral melodies and singers chanting his praises in Swahili. “War Machine” features another rising Nigerian star, rapper Odumodublvck, rounding out the album with a collaborative bang.

“HEIS” is a groundbreaking project that fully realizes the potential of Afro-rave while simultaneously paying homage to the genre’s roots. It’s a testament to Rema’s artistry and his dedication to pushing boundaries.  Following a record-breaking 2023 that saw him become the highest charting Afrobeats artist in Billboard Hot 100 history, a Guinness World Record holder, and the first African artist to perform at the Ballon D’Or ceremony, Rema shows no signs of slowing down. With “HEIS,” he continues to redefine Afrobeats, leaving fans eager to see where his musical journey takes him next.
