The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed that the explosion that tragically claimed the lives of Mr. and Mrs. George Onuabuchi in Abakaliki was caused by a gas cylinder, contrary to earlier reports suggesting an inverter battery explosion.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, the Command’s spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Joshua Ukandu, stated that the incident occurred on August 25. Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was the result of a gas leak.

“The incident took place in the Waterworks area of Abakaliki. Nearby residents alerted our personnel, who responded quickly. However, by the time they arrived, the victims had already been rushed to the hospital,” Ukandu said.

Tragically, both victims succumbed to their injuries. The wife, Chioma, passed away in August, and her husband, George, died in September. Chioma was reportedly the younger sister of popular Nigerian Afrobeat artist, Patoranking.

“There are limited details, as the victims did not survive to provide more information. What we do know is that it was a gas explosion, not an inverter battery as initially speculated,” Ukandu clarified.

A relative, who wished to remain anonymous, described the situation as a profound loss for the family. “They were a young couple, with only one child, a three-year-old son. It’s a devastating tragedy,” the relative shared.
