Rivers state Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says doctors should educate their patients on the need for regular exercise.
Governor Nyesom Wike said this during the opening ceremony of the 5th Nigeria medical association NMA games at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The Governor represented by the secretary to the state government Dr. Tammy Danagogo said Doctors should preach the gospel of fitness to their patients.
He said regular exercise would enable Nigerians to live a healthy life.
Governor Wike also commended the doctors for leading the way in creating awareness on the importance of sports to the body.
”The theme of your games is very instructive, A healthier Doctor, A healthier World. But I want to say that if you exercise and get healthy and then treat the world, I don’t think the world will get healthier that way. The only way a healthier doctor can make the world healthier is by passing the message that just as you the doctors need the sports to stay healthy, they also need sports to stay healthy.
”Sports is a veritable tool for boosting health, for bringing about unity amongst people and generally for human empowerment. So it is on that note that I want to urge you to not only continue to ensure that your members engage in sporting activities but also pass the message to your patients and the society at large. Health is largely dependent on diet and exercise, and I am happy that doctors who are champions of good health are leading the way”. he said.
Meanwhile the chairperson of Nigeria Medical Association NMA Rivers State Chapter, Dr. Obubelebara Adebiyi said the choice of Port Harcourt to host the 5th NMA games was due to the genuine hospitality of the Rivers people.
Dr Obubelebara Adebiyi also thanked Governor Wike for sponsoring the games.
Nigeria medical association NMA defeated Rivers State chapter of nurses and midwives one nil in the opening match of the games.
