Some human rights lawyers in Rivers State have said that the police in Nigeria are for sale, accusing them of doing the bidding of politicians and those who influence them with money.
One of the lawyers, Barr Higher King who made this known in a chat with our correspondent said the police in the country are no longer interested in professionalism.
He said, “the police we have in this country, not all of them are ready to the bought by politicians and the highest bidder.
“Once a politician or someone influences the police with money, they will come up with trump up charges and drag any victim to court in order to make a victim suffer in jail.
“These days, police don’t investigate matter anymore. They collect bribe and file false charges against any innocent person hated by their pay master.
“Santos Owolo Santos was one good example. The police filed defamation charges against this human rights activist and dragged him to a magistrate court.
“We were able to secure his bail and while the case was still pending with the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice, the police rushed and filed same matter at the high court.
“I told the court that the police can not be blowing hot and cold at the same time and that the proper thing to do is to wait for the DPP’s advice.
“Consequently, I brought a motion to dismiss the case and the court in its wisdom stroke it out in our favour.”
Higher King also urged the court to always fine the police each time they bring trump up charges to court, maintaining that such action by the court will make the police to be doing the right thing.
