Ikokwu Motor Spare Parts dealers have called for the state government’s urgent intervention, as their landlord has issued them a short notice to vacate their shop spaces.

Chairman of the Ikokwu Association Traders Association, Anthony Alaribeole, who made the call while reacting to the demolition of shops and looting of goods belonging to traders suspected to have been done by the property owner’s family, Late
Chief Gordon Mail Kpasa, said Ikokwu traders are now helpless because of the short notice issued to them.

According to him, thousands of shop owners will be displaced if the landlords finally take over the properties come August, 30 2020, which may lead to more crime and insecurity in the state.

“Last week Saturday 15th, August 2020, our landlord came with some security officers from Civil Defence Corp and their lawyer, they gathered some of the traders and told them they have disposed off the property where the major market is. They gave three weeks quit notice for us to vacate, that the investors who bought the land will come at the end of August, 2020 to take over the place.

“We were so panicked at the short notice. We are not contesting the property with them, we only begged them to allow us speak to the investors to give us sufficient time so we can look for alternative. As it is now, we cannot do anything within this short notice.

“The market in question is occupied by almost ten thousand traders. For now, there is no place in Port Harcourt that can contain the population here in this Ikokwu Market.

“We have been trying to dialogue with them, we have been trying to talk to their lawyer, all these effort are ongoing before this surprise attack last night at about 2am on Wednesday, 19th, August 2020. They took laws into their hands even when the improper quit notice given is still running.

“They broke into the market, took everything that were available in the market, deroofed some of the shops, burnt some of the shop Ikokwu Motor Spare Parts Dealers have called for the state government’s urgent intervention, as their landlord has issued them a short notice to vacate the property.

But, if at the end of the day, the traders over power me, nobody should hold me responsible”
