The fire which gutted Ek Oil petrol station at Eneka road in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers state has finally been put off by Mobil multinational company.

Our correspondent reports that the inferno which started on Monday 31st evening at about 5 pm, burnt down a truck fully loaded with 36,000 litres of premium motor spirit (PMS) and also affected a section of another filling station close by.

Manager of Ek Oil Nigeria Limited, Emmanuel Pius, told our correspondent Tina Amanda that all efforts made to put off the fire for two days proved abortive, adding that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

“I don’t know what caused the fire incident. I just came out of my office and I saw fire everywhere. We tried putting off the fire with our fire extinguisher but it didn’t work because the fire was too much.

‘’we called for the help of state fire service they couldn’t come to our rescue with the excuse that their two trucks are bad, so we called Shell company for help they responded promptly and came with their two trucks along the line, their materials finished and the fire still continued till the next day. It was Mobil company that finally came to quench the inferno”

He further expressed his dissatisfaction at the manner both state and federal fire service responds to disasters that have to do with lives and properties.

“Fire service should get their equipment ready at all times to fight disaster of this magnitude, millions of naira worth of properties that were destroyed during the cause of the fire would have been averted if there was a quick response.

“It’s sad that such a sensitive agency is not doing its job as supposed‘’
