Arch-Rivals of Rivers United, Sporting Lagos, and Doma United have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL. This spurred celebrations from Rivers United’s top influencers on social media platform X, like the Pride of Rivers
Sporting Lagos and Doma United faced relegation from the NPFL after their final matches. Sporting Lagos suffered a 1-0 loss to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, while Doma United drew 1-1 with Abia Warriors at home. This resulted in Sporting Lagos finishing 17th with 46 points and Doma United in 18th place with 44 points. Prior to this, El-Kanemi Warriors and Gombe United had also been relegated to the NNL. On a brighter note, Akwa United and Bayelsa United secured their positions in the top flight with impressive victories. Akwa United triumphed over Rivers United with a 3-1 scoreline, and Bayelsa United emerged victorious with a 2-0 win against Bendel Insurance.
These results marked significant outcomes in the NPFL season, with some teams securing their positions while others faced the disappointment of relegation. The final day of the season brought about both joy and sorrow for the clubs and their supporters, shaping the future landscape of Nigerian football.
One of the alleged Dark horses of the league, Sporting Lagos also known as the “noisy neighbors,” indeed made a mark in the NPFL this season. Their vibrant presence at the Mobaji Johnson Arena in Lagos and lively road shows added a unique and exciting atmosphere to the league. The carnival-like experience they provided during home games and colorful displays truly stood out, making them a refreshing addition to the football scene.
The club owned by fin-tech billionaire Shola Akinlade has assured their fans a quick return to the NPFL.
He said;
“After a whirlwind debut season in the NPFL, yesterday’s result confirms our relegation. It’s been an emotional several weeks — an emotional year,” the Lagos club posted on X.
“From a seven-game winless streak and a blowout SW derby to Lagos Island roadshows and away game road trips, this has been a season to remember.
“But this is a 100-year project — today’s setbacks are tomorrow’s stepping stones. We will surely be back in top flight as soon as possible.
“To our fans who travel from near and far and have stuck with us through every win and loss — we say a big thank you. You have made every blow less painful and every triumph infinitely more meaningful.
“Oh our fans, we love you.
“We go again! Let’s go Sporting.”
