An advocacy group under the auspices of the Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) has condemned the attacks on the nationwide protesters

On August 1, protesters began a nationwide protest tagged: #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, and the demonstration is expected to last for 10 days. The protest which started peacefully some couple of days back turned bloody especially in the Northern part of the country with killings recorded as well as the destruction of properties worth billions.

In its reaction, DHRD had in a statement signed by its Chairman, Clifford Christopher Solomon condemned the attack on the protesters, blaming security agents for playing a conniving role.

The statement was read as saying: “The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) Condemns in its entirety, the senseless attack on peaceful protesters who were calling for an end to bad governance and monumental corruption in Nigeria on Wednesday 7th August 2024.

“Regrettably, those who embarked on this attack are hired by anti-democratic forces to quell the voices of those who are advocating for a better life for all citizens and the enthronement of an egalitarian society.

“Without fear or favor, DHRD makes bold to say that the Nigeria police force and other sister security agencies are giving cover and know who these miscreants on rampage are. This is to say that the security agencies and the hoodlums are working together and implementing a script written down for them.

“We, therefore, call on those who are out to suppress, maim, and arbitrarily arrest the peaceful protesters who are calling for an end to bad governance to henceforth cease from their oppressive tendencies or face the full wrath of Nigerians as power belongs to the people.”
