Labour Leader Comrade Peter Onita has called on the Federal Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to urgently repair the Ahoada-Mbiama section of the East-West Road, which is in a deplorable state.

Speaking to our correspondent, Onita expressed dissatisfaction with the road’s condition and urged immediate intervention to prevent further daily loss of lives.

He lamented further that a journey from Ahoada to Mbiama Bayelsa state, which was formerly a minimum of one hour, is now a four to five hours journey, stressing that commuters are trapped on the road.

Onita however pointed out that should there be another flood in the Ahoada -Mbiama section of East-West it will result in a disaster capable of destroying more lives and property.

“The East-West Road between Ahoada and Mbiama where we had the flood two years ago that killed people, destroyed food crops and properties worth millions, up till now that portion of the road has not been fixed.

“Commuters plying the road to Ahoada, Bayelsa, Delta, and Edo have been trapped. The government needs to give priority attention to this part of the road.

“Goods and services from this area, contribute enormously to the resources of Nigeria. It is worrisome to see that the East-West Road has been in a bad state for a long time and the government is not doing anything about it.

“The NDDC and Federal Ministry of Works should please come to the aid of Niger Delta people by fixing the East-West road.

“Formerly, from Ahoada to Mbiama which is the Bayelsa area is not supposed to take a maximum of one hour, but for the past four and half hours we have been trapped on the road. Nobody is going forward nobody is moving backward, the situation is terrible”.

The labour leader called on Federal House Assembly members representing Rivers and Bayelsa States to join their voice in ensuring the East-West road is totally fixed.

“I call on the Representatives of Rivers and Bayelsa States in the Federal House Assembly to join their voice on the conclusion of this road by calling on relevant government authority to complete this road because if the flood comes back again it will be a nightmare”.
