Rivers State House of Assembly says it will enact new laws that will help to develop the agricultural sector in the state.
House committee chairman on agriculture, Honourable Chisom Dike who stated this in an interview with our reporter Tina Amanda, said agriculture is the focal point for a sustainable development which can be deduced from it contributions through food availability and security, the creation of employment, revenue generation amongst its operators.
According to him, agriculture is the only sector that will address the increasing agitations and restiveness in the country, stressing that it will save the economy from total collapse in the near future.
He opined that the continuous dependence on oil poses a dangerous path for the nation’s economy to flourish.
Honourable Dike reiterated that some existing agricultural laws in the state will be repealed to accommodate current development that will guarantee a favourable environment for agro-business to strive.
‘’In terms of laws for agricultural development in the state, most of the laws we met on the ground are becoming obsolete. For instance, the school to land authority, the idea behind it is not what we can implement.
“We as legislature, we are trying our best, partnering with ministry of agriculture and other agencies to see how we can come up with laws that will help to curb the agricultural lapses in the state and we have gone halfway in what we want to do in terms of new laws in Rivers state house of assembly”
