Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt secured a 2-0 win over hosts Sunshine Queens at the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Matchday 8 game played inside the Ondo Sports Complex, Akure.
By the win, the Reigning NWFL Champions extended their lead on top of the Group B table by recording a season double over the Betty Babes thanks to goals from Maryann Ezenagu and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.
Both sides had gone into the break with nothing showing on the scoreboard but Rivers Angels forward, Ezenagu broke the deadlock in the 64th minute before Okwuchukwu doubled the lead in the 83rd minute.
Wednesday’s win sees the Jewel Of Rivers increase their points tally to 16 points, three points above both Delta Queens and FC Robo Queens.
Ezenagu in a chat with the team’s media said she was happy with the goal she scored and the maximum points secured in Akure.
“I knew we were going to win today because we stayed positive and focused all through before heading into this game,” she said.
“Having played Sunshine Queens at home, we worked on our mistakes from the previous meeting and as you can see, we kept a clean sheet today.
“I’m happy with the goal I scored and proud of my teammates because they kept on pushing until the last second and I’m glad we picked all points.
“We just need to go back home now and prepare for our next game with Delta which I’m sure will be a tough one, so we need to go put in more work,” Ezenagu added.
The Port Harcourt side will return home to prepare for their Matchday 9 game against Delta Queens on March 2 at the University of Port Harcourt Sports Complex.
