Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt has successfully defended their Aiteo Cup title.
This follows their one-nil victory over Ibom Angels at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
The lone goal was scored by Juliet Sunday in the 48th minute of the game.
With the victory, Rivers Angels have now won the title a record 8th time.
The match had in attendance the President of the Nigeria Football Federation NFF Amaju Pinnick, chairman of the Nigeria Women’s Football League NWFL Aisha Falode and Governor of Bayelsa State Seriake Dickson.
The Head Coach of Rivers Angels Edwin Okon while praising his players for the victory said the girls displayed their champion’s stuff on the field of play.
Edwin Okon said that the change of tactics he introduced in the second half of the match made his side to win the title.
”It’s not easy. The team is a very hard working side spiritually and physically so I am the happiest person today because we crowned our struggles with success in Yenagoa” he said.
”In the first half, we missed three good scoring chances and in the second half, I just have to remind them that we just have to up our game because we need the cup.
“I watched the team in the first half and I observed their weakness and I called my captain and told her what to do and within three minutes of the second half, they scored the goal and that is how the match ended” he stated.
The Head Coach of Ibom Angels Whyte Ogbonnda, however, blamed poor officiating for his team’s loss.
He said the poor officiating disorganized his players during the match.
