The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State has tasked local government chairmen to prioritize the welfare of people living with disability in the state.

Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Rivers State said Ambassador Desmond Akawor said this during a courtesy by the Ogoni Association of persons living with disabilities in Port Harcourt.

He also expressed the party’s readiness to support people living with disabilities for any elective position in Rivers State.

”I’m sure it would be a mistake if at the local government level we don’t have people representing you at the council. I’m sure it will definitely be a mistake. You have visited us today. Yes, we’re aware that some of you are in PDP, some in APC, some in other political parties”.

”But we will persuade our local government chairmen who are our own ambassadors at that level to ensure that those you that share our dream, that shared the vision of Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Governor of the State are accommodated so that you can relate with other of your colleagues in various LGA’s within Rivers South-East Senatorial district where you belong. That I can assure you we can do that” he said.

Earlier in his address, the President of the Ogoni Association of persons living with disabilities, Ngo Baridaado said they want equal rights to participate in the politics of the state.

He said that their members are marginalized across every political sphere in the state.

”Among the registered person with disabilities in Nigeria, we’re about 31 million people. These people have the right to participate in the electoral vote and be voted for. So we want that error to stop that person with disabilities cannot be found in a political position. If you can check around Rivers State, there is no person with disability that is a councilor, not even a chairman and not even a Special Adviser that the Mr. Project has initiated the idea that they should be appointed into office” he said.
