The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rives State, Senator Magnus Abe has bemoaned the alleged attack of his supporters in Ayama area, Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State.
Abe, who addressed journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday, said his supporters in the area informed him on Monday morning that a group of boys had invaded and disrupted the preparation at the venue of a meeting with his supporters.
He said the meeting was, however, moved to the private residence of a supporter still in Oyigbo even though the town hall which he was asked not to use was his constituency project while serving as a Senator.
The former Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said on his way to attend the meeting, a group of boys accosted his motorcade in a community called Egberu, an entry point to Oyigbo from Tai Local Government Area.
He said the youths, armed to the teeth, demanded that he returned to Port Harcourt because the area is the territory of the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ambassador Desmond Akawor.
Abe also claimed the incident is not the first against him and his supporters, noting that similar incidents have occurred in Kana and Gokana local government areas.
The guber candidate said that he decided not to speak about it in order not to expose the state, stressing that no intimidation can scare him from contesting the 2023 election.
He said that the incident have been reported to the police and hoped that the new Commissioner of Police will provide the needed security for campaigns and elections.
Abe further advised politicians in the state to play by the rules to campaign fairly.
