Commercial bus drivers in Rivers State have told the Independent National Electoral Commission that they will not convey election personnel and materials again if their lives are not insured.
Every election year, INEC usually hire commercial bus drivers to convey its personnel and materials to voting centres across the country.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman, Urban Drivers Welfare Association, Rivers State, Lekia Isaac insisted that no commercial driver whose safety has not been guaranteed will be allowed to convey election personnel and materials in future elections.
According to him, “we have lost some many colleagues assigned to duty on election days and we are not ready to lose our colleagues again.
“We have noticed that security agents on election duties place more value on INEC personnel and materials than commercial drivers.
“Our lives are at risk every election year and now we need insurance cover before we will allow INEC to hire us.”
