Soldiers raid IMSU hostels, arrest male students. Hospitals complain mortuaries filling up

Nigerian Army personnel on Sunday raided several off-campus hostels of the Imo State University, arresting an unknown number of male students.

Students who confirmed this development said soldiers were moving from hostel to hostel at the Ukwu Uratta area, arresting students and tagging them ‘unknown gunmen’.

The students, however, said that they will protest to the school on Monday for the cancellation of their remaining examination, adding that some of their colleagues have been shot dead by security agencies in the past few days.

A student leader who identified herself simply as Nnenna said they have received numerous reports about the abduction and killing of their colleagues by armed men said to be soldiers.

She said that some of their students were victims of shoot-at-sight at Naze last, identified one of the killed as Anyadike Samuel.

Ralph Njokuobi, the public relations officer of the school said he was yet to confirm the reports.

Meanwhile, a staff of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri says the hospital’s mortuary has almost filled to capacity with unclaimed dead bodies.

The staff who did not want her name made public due to the sensitivity of the matter said security agents deposit no less than 15 corpses every day.

She said that the hospital’s administration has concluded plans to stop accepting corpses from next week until families come and claim the remains of their loved ones dumped at the facility.

According to her, most of the corpses do not have names attached to them, signifying that they might be those shot indiscriminately by security agents on the streets.
