Civil-Military, Police and Paramilitary Relations CIMPARR-NIGERIA has called for training and retraining of men and officers of Nigeria Police across all commands and divisions, including other security agencies, on respect for human rights.
State Coordinator CIMPARR-NIGERIA Green Isaac, who disclosed this to our Correspondent in Port Harcourt, said constant training would help law enforcement officers understand the importance of protecting human rights while carrying out their duties.
“Such training can include information on the relevant laws and policies, best practices for interacting with the public, and ways to de-escalate potentially volatile situations.
“Respect for human rights is crucial for creating a just and equitable society. Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms to which every person is entitled, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or any other characteristic.
“Examples of human rights include the right to life, freedom from torture, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly. All individuals and institutions, including law enforcement agencies, are responsible for respecting and protecting human rights.
“Upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights are fundamental for creating a just and equitable society. All individuals and institutions, including law enforcement agencies, should uphold these principles”.
The Coordinator CIMPARR-NIGERIA, however, commended the Nigeria Police, the Inspector General of Police, for upholding the rule of law by sanctioning erring officers nationwide.
According to him, upholding the rule of law is essential for maintaining a stable and just society. It ensures that everyone is subject to the same laws and that those laws are enforced impartially; when individuals or groups violate the law, they must be held accountable through legal means.
