Shortly after the sad news of Prof, Nimi Briggs’ death broke out on Monday, an Associate Professor at the University of Port Harcourt, Steve Wordu joined the list of other eminent personalities to mourn the former VC of UNIPORT.

According to a statement by his family, Prof Briggs passed away in the early hours of Easter Monday, 2023, aged 79 years.⁣⁣

In his tributes, Wordu said: “There goes a man of great accomplishment. He had transited into eternal glory for higher services in creation.

“Let us mourn him with a sense of gratitude to God who gave to us a teacher, soldier, scholar, physician, and vice-chancellor.

“I regard him as an academic statesman who had served the state and nation.

“He came to UNIPORT, first in acting capacity, and later became substantive VC. And that was the time when UNIPORT was having both academic and administrative crises.

“He was able to resolve those crises and built peace on campus. The security on campus during his time was properly managed.

“I can give him all the kudos for presiding effectively as a vice chancellor who also built capacity and peace on campus.”

Until his death, Prof Briggs was the 5th Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Pro-Chancellor of Federal University, Abakaliki, and Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa as well as Chairman, Committee of Pro Chancellors of Nigerian Universiti
