Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his commitment to restoring the glory of the state’s civil service, which he inherited in a near-comatose state. Fubara made this declaration during a courtesy visit from the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The governor revealed that his administration inherited a civil service with no promotions for 11 years, lacking human capacity development. Determined to address this, Fubara’s government initiated promotions for stagnated civil servants and engaged consultants to retrain the workforce, focusing on contemporary service delivery.

“When we came on board, we inherited a near-dead civil service… We came in and it wasn’t easy, but we had to give the civil servants hope by ensuring that they were promoted,” Fubara stated. He emphasized the importance of training, citing 2010 as the last time any training was conducted. “Training is the only thing that can build the service that will give us that level of result for transparency, efficiency, and accountability.”

It is worth noting that Fubara commended Walson-Jack on her new role and assured his administration’s willingness to collaborate with her office to improve the state’s civil service. He praised her as a worthy ambassador of Rivers State, urging her to protect the state’s interests and promote its progress.

In her response, Walson-Jack lauded Fubara’s leadership vision and dedication to good governance. She expressed confidence in their joint ability to advocate for policies unlocking Rivers State’s potential, ensuring citizens’ access to resources and opportunities for sustainable growth.

It bears mentioning that Walson-Jack emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments for effective governance. “The discussions at the ongoing 2024 annual management conference of the Nigeria Institute of Management underscore the importance of collaboration… This principle resonates strongly with the purpose of my visit.”

The Head of Service also commended Fubara’s commitment to hosting the 2024 Federal Public Service Games in November, which will showcase Rivers State’s capacity for excellence.
