In a significant operation against oil theft, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended seven suspects, including a notorious figure in illegal oil bunkering, in Rivers State. The arrests were made by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) following a tip-off about criminal activities in the area.
According to a statement from the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, the suspects were arrested during a sting operation in the Adobi Swampy Forest, located in the Odagwa region of Etche Local Government Area. The operation targeted a group suspected of large-scale oil theft and pipeline vandalism, prevalent issues in the Niger Delta.
Among those arrested was 43-year-old AbdulRauf Lawal, identified as a prominent player in illegal oil operations. Lawal and his associates were reportedly caught red-handed while engaged in activities related to oil theft. The operation revealed a sophisticated setup: the criminals had constructed a large surface trampoline reservoir filled with stolen crude oil siphoned from a nearby wellhead.
It is worth noting that the NSCDC team uncovered a disturbing array of equipment used in the illegal operations, including two local ovens designed for refining crude oil. Additionally, they discovered Tampauline reservoirs and a significant quantity of crude oil linked to an illegal refinery site near the Imo/Rivers 11 Flow Station.
“This operation highlights the extent of illegal activities taking place in our forests and the lengths to which criminals will go to exploit our resources,” Afolabi stated. “The equipment seized, including large amounts of crude oil stored in a wooden boat and industrial hoses used for siphoning, underscores the organized nature of these operations.”
The other individuals arrested alongside Lawal are Okechukwu Princewill, Samuel Chukwuma Nwogu, Ndubuisi Emmanuel, Samuel Okon Ebong, and Happiness Monday. Each suspect is believed to have played various roles in the oil theft network, from transporting stolen oil to purchasing it for resale.

The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to fighting oil theft and protecting Nigeria’s economy from the detrimental effects of such criminal activities. Afolabi emphasized the need for continuous collaboration with community members to provide information that can aid in further operations against oil bunkering.
“Our efforts will not wane,” he assured. “We will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle these criminal networks and safeguard our nation’s resources.”
Notably, community leaders have had mixed responses about such operations and the arrest of these suspects against the backdrop of harsh economic realities.
