An international organization known as Search for Common Ground has ended its two days intensive training for journalists in Rivers State ahead of the 2019 elections.
Over 20 journalists from various media houses in the state were selected for the training which started on Monday, February, 28 to 29 in Port Harcourt.
Speaking shortly after the end of the training, SFCG foreign trainer from Burundi, Aloys Niyoyia said their mission was to foster peace in Nigeria as they had achieved in many countries across the globe.
“We have been partnering with the media because we see their services as quite essential to peacebuilding in our society.
“Election is a sensitive aspect of democracy that requires strict adherence to media ethics. We came to train media practitioners on how to be conflict sensitive in their reportage.
“We want global peace. The way and manner we inform the public through media services go a long way in deciding how peaceful our society can be, “the trainer said.
On their parts, some participant journalists expressed satisfaction, describing the training as befitting.
They said, “we learnt new ways to report conflicts and elections.
We will ensure we practice what we have learnt. We thank the organizers for this opportunity.”
The training is also expected to take place in Bayelsa and Delta states respectively according to the organizers.
Search for Common Ground was established to mitigate conflict across the globe. Its Headquarters is in U S and Germany and has branches in over 35 countries.
