Human rights advocate condemns shooting of Julius Berger protesting staff

A Port Harcourt-based lawyer and human rights advocate, O. C Higher Kings has condemned the shooting at workers of Julius Berger Construction Company during a peaceful protest by officers of the police command attached to senior staffs of JBCC on Monday 20th September, at Bodo City in Gokana local government area in Rivers state.

The human rights advocate said workers at JBCC site at Bodo city who were said to have engaged in a peaceful protest to get the attention of their employer concerning the poor income they earn from the company which he said is below eight hundred.

According to him, four were shot with one Samuel Ajayi (adult) dead and three others badly injured with bullet wounds.

Continuing, he said Julius Berger construction company is emboldened with impunity to violate human rights of its employees because they have government backings.

He added that Nigerians are left with a choice of choosing JBCC because of unavailability of desired jobs.

He called on Rivers state government to intervene in the matter by advising JBCC to improve on workers welfare, reinstating sacked workers and ensuring adequate medical attention for casualties of JBCC.
