A Non-Governmental Organisation under the aegis of the Ogoni Liberation Initiative (OLI) has appealed to Federal Government to end the continuous strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The President of the group, Dr. Douglas Fabeke, made the appeal during a send forth and prayer programme, organised by the group in Bori, Khana local government area of Rivers State.
Fabeke said that the aim of the prayer was to pray about the success and challenges facing the people and also bid farewell to seven members of the group who are going abroad to study on scholarship sponsored by the Ogoni Liberation Initiative.
He, however, called on ASUU to change its approach in solving the challenges facing the educational system in the country, noting that education is the fundamental key to human capacity development.
He expressed regret in the educational system of the country, stressing that the nation’s education curriculum does not fit into the standard of today’s economic requirement.
According to him, the issue of strike is an old method to solve the problem facing our educational system.
“Universities are supposed to be a professional bodies that proffers solution to a nation’s problem.
“ASUU continuous strike now contributes more problem to students who ends up spending more years in school than the actual years meant for their course.”
Fabeke further advised federal government to build Nigeria education system to standard obtainable in western countries.
“It is time for government to look into the ASUU problem, proffer lasting solution and make education stress free like it is done in foreign countries.
“This is why we are sending some youths to study abroad and this was borne out of passion of what we saw our leader Ken Saro Wiwa do while when he was alive
“But this time, we are making it a global entrepreneurs from Ogoni land,”Fabeke said.
He urged Ogoni people to form a common front in order to achieve the desired mandate in 2023, maintaining that the ethnic nationality would not continue to be sidelined in the commonwealth of the state.
“We the Ogoni people on April 9, will declare our position on the 2023 governorship slot in Rivers State.”
