Churches flooded in Port Harcourt despite Wike’s directives

Despite the directives issued by the Rivers State Government on the containment of the spread of coronavirus, hundreds of churches were flooded on Sunday in Port Harcourt with hundreds of thousands of residents in attendance.

This is as the Nigerian ministry of health said four new cases of coronavirus have been discovered, making the numbers so far 26.

The ministry also said two of the cases have so far recovered.

Wike had during a statewide broadcast on Friday placed restrictions on large gatherings, especially from religious activities.

However, many of churches in Port Harcourt defied the directives and held crowded services.

Churches like salvation Ministries, Deeper life, Redeem and living faith held crowded services.

Some of the congregants who spoke to Theportcitynews said there has been no reported case of the virus in the state, so it makes no sense to stop them from going to church.

A church goer who identified himself as David Nwigwe said “But the same Wike attended a Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday a day after his directive”

Analysts have said the virus will likely hit Africa hard due to the continent’s poor health system and general poverty.
