Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has been released from the Department of State Services (DSS).
The actor was arrested on Friday by the DSS hours after the Nigerian Army released him.
The Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), in a statement signed by the Guild’s Communication Director, Monalisa Chinda, said the actor’s release was made possible by the Guild’s President, Ejezie Emeka Rollas.
“The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, has yet again secured the release of Actor Chiwetalu Agu from the custody of the DSS.
“On behalf of the Guild, I was at the DSS office with my colleague, the Senior Special Assistant on Military Affairs and Inter-Governmental Relations, to President Steve Eboh to receive Mr Agu today.
“The elated veteran Actor thanked God for surviving the ordeal and commended the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria headed by Ejezie Emeka Rollas for their relentless efforts in securing his release from the detention.”
Speaking on the actor’s release, Human rights lawyer Mike Ozekhome (SAN) said the 65-year-old actor was released after searching his phones and found nothing incriminating.
“Several interactions were held by the chambers with the DSS operatives, who were, however, very civil and very cooperative.
“Agu was released this (Tuesday) evening to Steve Eboh and Monalisa Chinda (Director of Media, Actors Guild of Nigeria) by the DSS at their headquarters in Abuja, after a careful search on his phones showed nothing incriminating,” he said.
