Every Wednesday, my mom’s excitement was palpable as she opened a new bale of goods, filled with surprises like clothes, shoes, bags, and more. This particular Wednesday, the bale was filled with an assortment of bags. We usually stored the bale at my aunt’s place before taking it home, and this time was no exception.

As we collected the bags, my aunt had already set aside the old, unsellable ones to discard. However, my sister’s keen eye spotted one of these bags, and she begged to take it home. My mom agreed, but two weeks passed, and the bag remained untouched.

My mom, tired of seeing the bag lying idle, threatened to burn it if my sister didn’t start using it. But just as she was about to carry out her threat, another sibling intervened, claiming she would use the bag. The following Sunday, this sibling decided to carry the bag and even put ₦500 inside, hoping to get into the habit of using it.

However, she ended up carrying a different bag instead, and the old bag remained forgotten. Another week went by, and my mom was determined to burn the bag once and for all. She had already lit the fire when my younger sister suddenly remembered that her ₦500 was still inside the bag.

As she rushed to retrieve her money, she made a surprising discovery – €100 hidden deep within the bag. Excited, she showed it to my mom, and they quickly looked up the exchange rate online. To their astonishment, it was equivalent to ₦170,000!

“The bag, once destined for the flames, had turned out to be a treasure trove. My mom and sisters couldn’t believe their luck, and the bag, once deemed useless, had become a valuable possession”. My mum said.
