According to Wikipedia, Safe sex is sexual activity using methods or devices (such as condoms) to reduce the risk of transmitting or acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especiallyHIV. “Safe sex” is also sometimes referred to as safer sex or protected sex.
Better Health Channel puts it this way, “Safe sex is having sexual contact while protecting yourself and your sexual partner against sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy. Sexual contact that doesn’t involve the exchange of semen, vaginal fluids or blood between partners is considered to be safe sex.”
During this course of writing this article, I ensured to search as many sites as possible to know if there is anywhere safe sex is explained to be a sexual intercourse between two people who instead of wearing condoms decides to wear rings instead. My search was one of futility because I saw not one.
Where then did some Nigerian women get this idea of a safe sex being one done while adorned with a mere metallic jewelry? Could it be that that there are some of these ring with charms to prevent sexually transmitted infections that I am unaware of? I think need to be schooled on this topic.
Wait a minute! Could it be that what they truly mean is to have unprotected sex only when married. This in itself isn’t reason enough to say that the safest sex is done with a ring though. Hold on! Does it also mean that married people are free from sexually transmitted infections? The answer to this question is a definite no because with the high rate of infidelity amongst these married people, one can truly not be sure of these things lately.
My dear sisters and brothers, that you’re wearing a ring and having sex with your partner does not make it safe because you can’t always vouch for your partners faithfulness. Safe sex remains sex with protection to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. If your religious leader told you that there is no safe sex except the one done while wearing a ring, tell him/her I said it is a lie.
