President of Russia, Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned other countries against interfering in its military action in the Republic of Ukraine.

He said that any attempt to interfere with Russia’s action in Ukraine would lead to “consequences they have never seen”.

Putin in a televised address had announced a military operation in Ukraine, which he is to “demilitarize” the country.

He noted that Russia does not have a goal to occupy Ukraine, rather has the intent to protect civilians, especially those in eastern Ukraine.

Putin, who accused the US and its allies of shunning Russia’s demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, urged the Ukrainian military to put down their arms, noting that they will be responsible for any bloodshed.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine swore that its allies will respond to the unprovoked attack by Putin.

Britain’s ambassador to Ukraine, Melinda Simmons has responded noting that a “wholly unprovoked attack” on the country was starting after President Putin authorised a special military operation there.

We can never be intimidated – Wike tells APC

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has mocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its inability to conduct its national convention.

The governor said a party that cannot organise its convention should be viewed as inept in administering the country.

He said this while speaking at the special grand reception organised to celebrate the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu by Imo State PDP chapter at Kanu Nwankwo Sports Complex, Owerri on Wednesday.

Wike stated that such inability as shown by the APC is another proof for Nigerians to use in denying the APC any place of governance both at the federal level and in any State of the federation in 2023.

“Nigerians are angry because the party (APC) at the national level is a failure. It’s a failure to the point that they are ruling Nigeria with tension. Ordinarily, to sign the Electoral Act, they keep on postponing it everyday and Nigerians are tired.

“What they are doing is to postpone convention. A party that cannot hold a national convention is it a party that can rule Nigeria?

“Ordinary convention, a party in power cannot hold one. Look at how we did our own convention. That is to tell you that PDP is the party that should rule Nigeria. This is the party that will rule Imo State too.”

Governor Wike enjoined members of the PDP in Imo State not to succumb to any form of intimidation against them by any party.

He said the days of such intimidation are gone and urged them to forge a common front because there has to be a party before election is won.

The governor emphasised that one of the reasons of him being at the reception was to tell them of the need for PDP to strategise and reclaim the governorship of Imo State because the sitting governor has failed already.

“The only mistake that we will make to allow the man to come back is for us not to work together, and we will not make that mistake.

“Now, all of us must unite. If there is no party, there will be no governor. If there is no party, there will be no president.

“Let nobody fear, nobody can intimidate us. Can you be intimidated? All that time has passed when somebody that carried fourth will come first. It will never happen again.

“But if you want us to take back Imo State in the next election, all of us must work together. We are ready to support you to take back Imo State.”

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT), Senator Walid Jubril acknowledged the tremendous work done by the leaders of the party to ensure it waxes stronger.

Jubril said members of BoT are in support of what the Governors and the National Working Committee (NWC) are doing as they galvanize all party faithful and Nigerians in the mission of rescuing the country.

PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu led members of the NWC to the event where they were all decorated with ensemble of the party.

I can become governor without Amaechi’s support – Abe

abe

Former senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in Rivers State, Magnus Abe has said that godfatherism does not have a place in modern democracy in Nigeria.

He said he has the experience and capacity that can drive the society as he can become the next governor of Rivers State without the support of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

Abe disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme, where he said that he has been called by the people to run for the office of governor in 2023 but is yet to make a decision.

“No human being is God. So, you can’t say that without a particular human being, in a democracy, nothing can happen.

“In a democracy, I don’t think the party has one leader as far as the South-South is concerned; That ‘Oga’ type of politics, I don’t think it has a place in modern Nigeria that is coming,” he added.

The Rivers APC chieftain further noted that the crises experienced in Rivers APC is beyond himself and Amaechi.

He explained that the minister had asked those who do not agree with his opinion to leave the party, adding that one of the challenges people face is how to accommodate the opinion of those who do not agree with them.

According to him, “I don’t think it is about me and Rotimi Amaechi being on good terms or bad terms, the reality of our situation is that we both belong to the same political party. We have not been on the same page because the minister said anybody who is not with him is no longer a member of the party and that is not what the constitution says.”

Abe, however, agreed that the APC must put its home in order in Rivers to win in the next election.

Rivers Court jails two for 12 years for child trafficking

A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital has sentenced two young women to twelve years imprisonment for conspiracy and child trafficking.

The convicts identified as Chinaza Smart and Amarachi Ahukanna were convicted for conspiring to sell a two-year-old boy, Daniel Smart for the sum of N400,000 to a woman simply identified as Precious, who is now at large.

In her judgement, the Presiding Chief Magistrate, Felicitas Amanze, described the crime as “heinous” against an innocent child whose whereabouts is still unknown to date.

She held that the accused persons were guilty of the crime noting that the 2nd Defendant, Amarachi Ahukanna, who introduced the first defendant, Chinaza Smart to the child trafficking business lied to the court.

According to the ruling, Ahukanna lied that she did not convince the first defendant to sell her son, in order to raise money to travel to Dubai where she can earn N400,000 every month.

The Chief Magistrate held that the five years sentence on count one and seven years on other charges are to run consecutively.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom, the representative of the Federation of International Female Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State chapter, Esther Achor-Korienta, said FIDA is happy with the judgment delivered and would ensure that child trafficking stops in the state.
