As World’s inequality grows, more people become billionaires.

The global economy created a record number of billionaires last year, exacerbating inequality amid a weakening of workers’ rights and a corporate push to maximize shareholder returns, charity organization Oxfam International said in a new report.

The world now has 2,043 billionaires, after a new one emerged every two days in the past year, the nonprofit organization said in a report published Monday. The group of mostly men saw its wealth surge by $762 billion, which is enough money to end extreme poverty seven times over, according to Oxfam.

According to separate data compiled by Bloomberg, the top 500 billionaires’ net worth grew 24 percent to $5.38 trillion in 2017, while the world’s richest person, Amazon.com Inc.’s Jeff Bezos, saw a gain of $33.7 billion.

“The billionaire boom is not a sign of a thriving economy but a symptom of a failing economic system,” said Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International. “The people who make our clothes, assemble our phones and grow our food are being exploited.”

Oxfam published the report as global leaders, chief executives and bankers arrive in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting. Noting that many of the world’s elite say they’re concerned about income inequality, the charity said most governments are “shamefully failing” to improve the matter.

Oxfam called on governments to limit shareholder and executive returns, while ensuring workers receive a living wage. It also recommended eliminating the gender pay gap and raising taxes on the wealthy, among other suggestions.

“People are ready for change,” Byanyima said. “They want a limit on the power and the wealth which sits in the hands of so few.”

GÉANT awards 15-year contract to MainOne for connectivity services.

The EU-funded AfricaConnect2 project has just announced that, following the tender call to connect West and Central (W&C) Africa back in June 2016, GÉANT has awarded a 15-year contract to MainOne for connectivity services. By signing the contract through AfricaConnect2, WACREN, the regional Research and Education Network in West and Central Africa, will join the global Research and Education (R&E) networking community. In addition to that, a complementary contract was signed with XON Systems for the provision of equipment.

This comes at the time of an ever-widening digital divide. The slow and sporadic adoption of ICT technologies in W&C Africa has led to one of the lowest internet penetration rates in the world. In this light, the recent contract announcement will undoubtedly facilitate the digital economy and will allow WACREN to truly unleash its potential and work with its members to meet the needs of its users.

Welcoming the progress of the AfricaConnect2 project and underlining the importance of connecting the region to the global R&E network, Boubakar Barry, CEO of WACREN said: “The signing of the contracts with MainOne and XON is an important milestone in the journey WACREN has embarked on towards the provision of first-class network infrastructure for the education and research community in West and Central Africa. When the first connections will be up in the first quarter of 2018, the big hole that currently exists in the global research and education networking map will finally be closed”.

Leveraging EU funding, AfricaConnect2 was able to secure a 15-year IRU (Indefeasible Right of Use) and pay an upfront circuit provisioning cost. This supports the EU objective of creating a sustainable, high-capacity data communications network that serves higher education and research institutions across the region.

Initially, the WACREN network will provide a 10Gbps link from Lagos, Nigeria to London, UK where it interconnects with the pan-European GÉANT network, thus providing access to R&E collaborations with over 50 million researchers, academics and students across Europe. As part of the contract, an additional link will go out from Lagos terminating in Accra, Ghana. The implementation of this contract will not only connect the first two countries in West and Central Africa but will also form the building block for the WACREN backbone in support of R&E communities across the entire Central and Western part of the African continent.

MainOne, the company which was awarded the contract for the provision of network connectivity services in the WACREN region after being successful in the highly competitive connectivity tender, is a leading provider of innovative telecom services and network solutions in West Africa.

Funke Opeke, Chief Executive Officer of MainOne, commended the commitment of WACREN to connect regional researchers to the global research and education communities across the world: “MainOne was born out of a passion to close the digital divide in West Africa and this agreement with WACREN leverages our capacity and provides us the opportunity to get all Research and Educational institutions in West Africa connected among themselves and to the rest of the world. We are delighted to have won this bid and believe we will add value to institutions in our region with our cost-effective and innovative connectivity solutions”.

On the other hand, the contract with XON Systems, an IP equipment provider, completes the first procurement cycle by introducing a 4-year framework agreement under which WACREN is able to purchase the IP Routing equipment required for setting up and running its regional network.

“XON have worked closely with GÉANT in the past on the AfricaConnect projects and we are honoured and privileged to have been selected as the IP-routing equipment supplier of choice to help build the AfricaConnect2 project for the WACREN network”, said Sub-Saharan Sales Manager Dewalt Uys. “By leveraging our vast experience of providing equipment and services to Tier-1 service providers across the continent, we can bring our vendor partnerships, engineering competency and logistics expertise as we help WACREN embark on this formidable and exciting journey.”

Celebrating this achievement, Cathrin Stöver, GÉANT’s Chief Collaboration Officer and the project manager of AfricaConnect2, said: “The global R&E community has just become stronger and more enriched. I congratulate WACREN on this milestone and invite its users to make the most of the unlimited opportunities that this sort of connectivity brings.”

Delta State Government extend hands to Avengers over threat.

Deputy Governor of Delta State and Chair, Delta State Advocacy Committee Against Vandalism of Oil and Gas Facilities, Barr. Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, has appealed to the Niger Delta Avengers to sheathe their swords and come to the dialogue table, according to a Vanguard reports.

The NDA hinted days ago of intention to attack critical oil assets in resumed programme tagged “operation red economy” aimed at bringing Nigeria’s oil production and export capacity and hence its largely oil-based economy to ground zero.

But the Otuaro-led Advocacy Committee with Dr. Chris Ekiyor as Secretary, has extended invitation to the NDA, asking the militant body to formally lodge their grievances to Governor’s office Annexe, Warri or to the Deputy Governor’s Office, Government House, Asaba for subsequent engagement. Addressing newsmen in Warri, following Avenger’s fresh threat, Otuaro said:

“As agitators, we must be mindful not to cancel out the modest gains already made through the dialogue process with the Federal Government which is still on course. Days back, the House of Representatives passed the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Bill to law as the Senate did last year. The Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) was also just passed. These are few pointers among others of better things to come”, Otuaro said.

“The Delta State Advocacy Committee Against Vandalism of Oil and Gas Facilities which I chair, just concluded a 2-day Conference on securing oil installations in Delta State. Conference drew attendance from oil companies, government bodies and communities from both Itsekiri and Ijaw Kingdoms in the riverside areas of the state. To underscore the importance of the conference, the Country Chair/Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Company (SPDC), Mr. Osagie Okunbor, personally attended and delivered the keynote address”, Otuaro said.

“Among several issues, Conference resolved that oil bearing communities must be engaged to better protect oil installations. It was agreed that oil installations vandalism was criminal and shooting self and future generations in the foot, having regard to concomittant environmental despoliation and loss of revenue for development of the region”, Otuaro informed.

“At a post-conference press briefing in Warri, the Advocacy Committee hinted of arrangements to reach higher platforms to engage authorities of key issues raised at the conference towards resolving same. We have made contacts and gotten responses; I can tell you that there is yet no reason to be pessimistic”, Otuaro added.

“Delta State Government efforts at peace for development of the oil bearing areas is without prejudice to other groups and bodies in commendable nonviolent agitation for the improvement of the Niger Delta region”, Otuaro clarified, adding: “Experience shows that we can achieve more through dialogue than by violence. It is not only the Federal Government that needs the oil revenue to develop the entire nation. We also need revenue that ensures the modest development we can bring about. While we deserve more, we cannot endanger the environment for survival of our generation, let alone future generations”.

Nigerians are waking up to reality – Secondus

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, has said that Nigerians have woken up to the reality of the mistake they made in 2015 by electing Buhari as president.

He made the remark while addressing newsmen on Sunday. He also noted that Buhari is making the 2019 presidential race easy for the opposition with his actions and policies.

He stated that the President was taking Nigerians for a ride and was busy “testing their collective patience with his statements and actions.”

According to Secondus, “You can see that Nigerians have realised that they made mistake in electing President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.”

The PDP Chairman stressed that it was also wrong for the President to have described Nigerians as being impatient.

He maintained that Buhari has abandoned Nigerians and those who voted him into office.

Meanwhile, Secondus has appointed Senator Ighoyota Amori as Political Adviser.

Senator Amori, who represented Delta Central in the Senate had served as Political Adviser two past governors of Delta State as well as Special Adviser on Reconciliation and Conflict Management to two past National Chairmen of the PDP, the latest being the immediate past National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Why Your Prescription Drugs Fail ? – Lynda Ndunagu

Shot of a pharmacist assisting a customer at the prescription counter. All products have been altered to be void of copyright infringements

Ever wondered why certain medications don’t work after several days of use? Normally people who have experienced this will conclude that the drug is fake, expired or even a wrong prescription. Some will even go as far as blaming their village people for being at the top of their game. But do you know there are certain foods and medicine you shouldn’t mix together?

Yes. Certain meals can prevent your medications from working, or worse still, cause dangerous side effects, and we have curated 6 of them here. Many people probably do not know this, so share to save a life.

Vitamin C and Anti-malaria drugs

This is what happens when you mix both. But first a background:

All drugs are metabolized in the liver. The liver is rich in iron, and iron is important in the life cycle of malaria parasites (plasmodium). Vitamin C helps in absorption of iron, which goes to the liver. Malaria parasites accumulate in the liver and multiply since the iron they need to survive is surplus there. This counteracts the effect of whatever malaria drug you’re taking. So chill on those citrus fruits or supplements when you’re treating malaria.

Painkillers and Soft drinks

We all know soft drinks contain carbonated water. I mean, it’s boldly written on the bottle label/can. Carbonated water = Carbon-dioxide gas + water (LOL, no, you do not just add carbon-dioxide and water together, it has to be dissolved under pressure and all). So when you take painkillers and soft drinks together, the Carbon-dioxide gas and the acid it contains increases concentration of the drugs in the blood, which leads to toxicity that could be fatal.

Diary products and Antibiotics

Antibiotics are drugs used in the treatment and prevention of bacteria. Examples are Tetracycline and penicillin. Dairy products are rich in Calcium, which prevents the body from absorbing these antibiotics. This reduces the drug’s efficacy.

Banana and Anti-hypertensive drugs

Bananas are rich in potassium. Anti-hypertensive drugs increase potassium levels in the blood. Anti-hypertensive drugs + Bananas = too much potassium which leads to irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations and could causes diseases such as Arrhythmia. Love your heart.

Grape fruit and Statins

Statin is a class of drug used to lower cholesterol levels. Like most drugs, it also has side effects. Grape fruit contains a compound/chemical that stops the breakdown of statins in the intestine. It leads to increased level of the drug = higher risk of side effects.

Leafy Vegetables and Anti Coagulants (Blood Thinner)

Anti-coagulants (Blood Thinners) are medications that decelerate blood coagulation. No, they don’t actually thin your blood but they prevent blood clots from growing larger and are used to prevent stroke and treat heart disease. Examples are Aspirin, Warfarin.

Leafy Vegetables are rich in Vitamin K – Vitamin K promotes blood clotting. So what happens? The effect of the drug is countered.

Bonus

This shouldn’t be the first time you read “Don’t take drugs with alcohol’. Why so?

Drugs are metabolized in the liver. Alcohol is metabolized in the liver. You actually over work your liver when taking alcohol and drugs at the same time leading to liver damage.

We all know medicine comes with a long list of things you can’t do but what most people don’t know is that some natural healthy meals are part of the list. Limit certain foods and if a certain drug doesn’t work or makes you feel some type of way, don’t assume anything. Immediately consult your doctor for advice.

Football: Europe at the weekend.

John Diidi

Madrid gets big win, Arsenal and Chelsea in Big wins as Napoli maintains top spot in Serie A.

After a weekend filled with amazing football action in Europe, we bring you a roundup of games from the big leagues.

For Real Madrid, this season can best be described as a disaster especially in the league, as they have slipped down to fourth place, 19 points behind table-topping rivals Barcelona.

It seemed to get even worse this weekend, as they fell behind at home to Deportivo after 23 minutes, but the goal proved to be the wake-up call they needed, as braces from Nacho, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside a solitary Luka Modric strike, ensured a 7-1 win for the Los Blancos.

Elsewhere in Spain, Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona hit a complete handful of goals at Betis to keep the La Liga chasing pack at arm’s length.

Atletico Madrid were held at home by Girona in Spain, Valencia were stunned by Las Palmas, who have climbed off the foot of the LA Liga table.

In England, Chelsea and Arsenal also secured big wins this weekend, as a man of match performance from Eden Hazard helped the Premier League champions to a comprehensive 4-0 win over Brighton – their first league victory of 2018.

Hazard capped off his magnificent display, where he scored twice, by handing his shirt over to a little boy who requested it after the final whistle.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal put behind them the impending departure of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United, as the Gunners took only 22 minutes to net four times, Nacho Monreal, Alex Iwobi, Laurent Koscielny and Alexandre Lacazette hitting the net as Arsene Wenger watched his team run out 4-1 winners against a sorry Crystal Palace.

Sergio Aguero scored a hatrick, his 10th, 11th and 12th league goals against Newcastle as Manchester City saw off the Magpies 3-1.

In Italy, Dries Mertens’ 67th minute goal was enough for Napoli to see off Atalanta and maintain top spot in Serie A, where Lazio hit five past Chievo Verona. Franck Kessie’s brace was enough for AC Milan to win at Cagliari, a late Matias Vecino goal salvaged a point for Inter at home to Roma.

In the Bundesliga, Thomas Muller scored his 100th league goal in Bayern Munich’s 4-2 win over Werder Bremen. Koln bagged a third league win on the bounce, to come within four points of the relegation play-off place.

In Ligue 1, Bordeaux began life after Jocelyn Gourvennec, with a win at Nantes.

Lyon left it late against Paris Saint-Germain, Memphis Depay popping up with the winner for Les Gones at home to the leaders.

NPFL : Rivers United and Go Round FC suffer contrasting fortunes.

By John Diidi.

Two of Rivers State’s representatives in the Nigerian Professional Football league suffered contrasting results in the match day 3 fixtures.

The ‘Pride’ of Rivers, Rivers United defeated Kano Pillars, 2-1 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium to climb to 8th position on the league table.

Rivers United striker Guy Kuemian scored his second goal of the season to give Rivers United the win.

After a seemingly quiet opening minutes, Midfielder Bamba Bakari’s volley gave the pride of Rivers the lead in 20 minutes through an Ojobo pin point cross, before Kano Pillars Junior Lokosa levelled the scoreline when he pounced on a mistake by Gabriel Olalekan and unleashed a ferocious strike from inside the area.

Kuemian, made sure the home side were the victors when he tapped home Ochewechi Salefu’s cutback in 56minutes.

Meanwhile in Makurdi, debutants Go Round FC fell to Lobi Stars in a game they were expected to have gotten a result judging from their second half performance.

Samad Kadiri’s header from close range in the 31st minute was the goal that eventually won the game for his side (Lobi Stars) at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.

Go Round now sits in 15th position after 2 defeats from 3 games.

Rivers United will travel next to Akure for a date with Sunshine Stars, while Go Round FC will host Heartland FC at the Krisdera Stadium, in Match Day 4 NPFL midweek games.

Herdsmen to be registered in Ekiti – Fayose

Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, has stated that herdsmen grazing their cows in the rural communities must be registered so as to ascertain their true identity.

The governor who disclosed this after a clash with herdsmen on Sunday, left a pregnant woman dead in the state, said that the era when herdsmen kill farmers in the rural communities and go scot free is gone.

He maintained that Henceforth, to operate in Ekiti State, herdsmen must have to register with N5,000 in host communities, saying that government must know the identity of all herdsmen operating in Ekiti and who should be held responsible in the event of any further attacks in the state.

The Governor who had earlier on provided hotlines for the indigenes of the state to report any criminal activities by the herdsmen, urged hunters in the state to protect the communities.

5 Ways to Conquer Fear and Anxiety

Dale Carnegie is one of the most trusted authors in the self-improvement space, thanks largely to his bestseller How to Win Friends and Influence People, originally published in 1936.

His 1948 book, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, deals with tactics for liberating yourself from nagging anxieties that make you less happy and less productive.

The book grew out of Carnegie’s experiences teaching adult education courses at the YMCA in New York City. Carnegie realized that worry was a common theme among his students, no matter their profession or background, and set out to write a book that would inspire them to take action against their own psychic demons.

In the seven years leading up to the book’s publication, Carnegie researched ancient philosophy and spoke to a range of business executives about their strategies for conquering worry. But most importantly, he conducted an experiment of sorts by giving his students advice for eliminating worry and observing what worked.

We read through How to Stop Worrying and Start Living and pinpointed Carnegie’s five most compelling strategies for reducing everyday anxieties.

1. Ask yourself, “What’s the worst that can happen?”

There’s a simple three-step technique that can help when you’re besieged by personal or professional worries.

First, ask yourself what’s the worst that could possibly happen. Second, prepare to accept the worst. Finally, figure out how to improve upon the worst, should it come to pass.

This technique is based on an anecdote from Willis Carrier, founder of the modern air-conditioning industry. While working for the Buffalo Forge Company as a young man, Carrier found that a new gas-cleaning service his company provided wasn’t as effective as he’d hoped.

Carrier realized that the worst that could happen was that his company would lose $20,000. He then accepted it: The company could qualify the loss as the cost of researching a new strategy. Finally, he figured out how to improve the situation: If the company bought $5,000 worth of new equipment, they could resolve the issue. Ultimately, that’s exactly what they did, and they ended up making $15,000.

2. Gather all the facts in an objective way

As Herbert E. Hawkes, former dean of Columbia College, told Carnegie, “If a man will devote his time to securing facts in an impartial, objective way, his worries will usually evaporate in light of knowledge.”

Carnegie offers two ways to go about collecting facts objectively. You can pretend that you’re gathering this data for someone else, so you’re less emotionally invested in what you find.

Or you can pretend that you’re a lawyer who is preparing to argue the other side of the issue — so you gather all the facts against yourself. Write down the facts on both sides of the case and you’ll generally get a clearer picture of the truth.

3. Generate potential solutions to the problem

Leon Shimkin, then general manager at Simon and Schuster (he later became the owner), figured out a way to cut the time he spent in meetings by 75%.

He told his associates that every time they wanted to present a problem at a meeting, they had to first submit a memorandum answering four questions: What is the problem? What is the cause of the problem? What are all possible solutions of the problem? What solution do you suggest?

According to Shimkin, once he instituted this new system, his associates rarely came to him with their concerns.

Xanax (Alprazolam) at https://tysonmutrux.com/xanax-alprazolam-1-mg/ is a tranquilizer prescribed for anxiety, neurosis, which are accompanied by a sense of danger, tension, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, psychosomatic disorders. It is effective for neutralizing neurotic reactive-depressive, anxiety-depressive states that are accompanied by a deterioration in mood, a decrease in interest in the surrounding reality, a decrease in appetite, and panic disorders (both accompanied by phobias and without them).

“They have discovered that in order to answer those four questions they have to get all the facts and think their problems through,” he told Carnegie. Once they did that, they typically found that “the proper solution has popped out like a piece of bread popping out from an electric toaster.”

In other words, action replaced worrying and talking.

4. Remember the law of averages

The law of averages refers to the probability of a specific event occurring — and you should consult the law to find out if it’s worth fretting. Chances are good that whatever you’re worried about isn’t likely to transpire.

Carnegie writes that the U.S. Navy employed the law of averages in order to boost sailors’ morale. Sailors who were assigned to high-octane tankers were initially worried that they would be blown up when the tank exploded. So the Navy provided them with exact figures: Of the 100 tanks that were hit by torpedoes, 60 stayed afloat and only five sank in less than 10 minutes, leaving time to get off the ship.

5. Place stop-loss orders on your worries

This strategy is based on a principle in stock trading. One investor said he set a stop-loss order on every market commitment he made. Here’s how it works: Say you buy a stock that sells for 100 dollars a share and set a stop-loss order for 90 dollars a share. As soon as that stock dips to 90 dollars a share, you sell it — no questions asked.

You can use this principle in everyday life. For example, Carnegie once wanted to be a novelist, but after two years of toiling away without much success, he decided to cut his losses and go back to teaching and nonfiction writing.
