Diobu residents decry PHED’s inhumane treatment

Residents of Diobu have cried out against management of Portharcourt Electric Distribution, PHED, for the company’s inability to provide the area with electricity.

The angry residents who spoke to a TPCN correspondent, stated that the area has not had electricity for two weeks.

The residents said that the inhumane treatment by the power distribution company has made life in the area unbearable and has affected businesses.

However, a representative of the power distribution company said that the company does not generate power but only distribute amounts allocated to it.

He maintained that the waves of protests against the company in Portharcourt is unnecessary as it is a national problem stating that the company has begun rationing power so that it will get to every household.

The residents threatened to protest to PHED office at D-Line if the company does not provide the area with electricity.

Payment of salaries is a priority – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, has said that payment of salaries should be given maximum priority in the state.

Governor Wike said this during the swearing in of 15 Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen who had been screened and confirmed by the State House of Assembly.

The Governor Wike charged the caretaker committee chairmen to pay the salaries of local Government workers for December 2017, January 2018 and February 2018.

He explained that the funds were not released to the immediate past council administrators because the tenures of the former councils had expired.

He said: “The payment of salaries of workers must be given priority attention. As you take over the councils , pay the outstanding three months salaries”

Governor Wike also charged the urban local government areas especially PHALGA and Obio Akpor to focus on sanitation of different suburbs. He urged the chairmen to engage youths to promote environmental sanitation.

He stated that any caretaker committee chairman involved in using council funds to service his political godfather will be sanctioned.

Nigeria Sues Alabama State University Over Scholarship Scandal

The Nigerian government has dragged a university in the United States, the Alabama State University, to court for allegedly mishandling the scholarship meant for students’ rent, books and food.

According to a BBC report, Nigeria is also accusing the university of charging them for accommodation they did not use and lessons they did not take.

But the university has denied the allegation, telling local media it had “adhered to and complied with every instruction and direction given to the university by the Nigerian government regarding that agreement.”

It admitted that the Nigerian government was owed $202,000, saying it had been deposited into an account.

But Anthony Ifediba, who represents the students, said they believed the university might have withheld as much as $800,000.

He told the Montgomery Advertiser that the Nigerian government had paid Alabama State University about $5m, which was meant to cover tuition and living costs for all the students.

“I hope it will sober the Alabama State University up, and its new President, to realise that what these students are talking about is very serious and it’s having an adverse effect on them legally and I’d imagine public relations-wise,” he stated.

Mysterious deaths strike fears in Uganda

Mysterious deaths of foreigners and locals are stoking fears in Uganda about crime amid an ongoing feud among the country’s security agencies, and now the president is weighing in.

In the past month four Europeans have been found dead in the East African country. Police say a Finn and a Swede whose bodies were discovered separately in their hotel rooms in the capital might have been murdered. The third case is of a Belgian man who reportedly killed himself. In the fourth case, a German man is said to have suffered a heart attack.

And earlier this week, the body of a young local woman was found dumped along a highway, the victim of kidnappers who had chopped off two of her fingers and sent them to her family in a bid to force them to pay $1 million.

That case has shocked many in Uganda, where security is often cited as one of the strengths of longtime President Yoweri Museveni, who has relied heavily on the security forces and multiple intelligence agencies to stay in power.

Museveni on Wednesday called for the collection of the “DNA records of everybody” in a bid to stem the crime rate, and is vowing to catch the young woman’s killers.

“I will not allow anybody to interfere with the freedom of our young people,” the president said.

But critics of Museveni, a U.S. ally on regional security who took power by force in 1986, say he is no longer as firmly in charge as he once was and that criminal gangs are exploiting feuds within his security agencies over money and power.

Last month Museveni acknowledged a fight among some leaders of the security agencies and urged them to stop.

“The fighting is about money,” lawmaker Ssemujju Nganda told The Associated Press. “I was joking with a friend that I don’t know if I am going to be killed by the Internal Security Organization or the police. Criminal gangs have taken advantage of their laxity.”

Local newspapers, including the government-backed New Vision, have published reports of a tussle between the police and the Internal Security Organization, a domestic spy agency that reports to Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, a rival of the police chief, Gen. Kale Kayihura.

In recent months, some of Kayihura’s perceived allies have been arrested and charged with crimes such as abduction, signaling the police chief is out of favor with the president.

“Ultimately it’s a question of governance. The lawlessness is caused and helped by poor governance,” said Ladislaus Rwakafuuzi, a local human rights lawyer. “When some people are given license to terrorize others with impunity that’s because they proclaim to be protecting one person in power.”

Opposition leaders in Uganda are frequently arrested and jailed when they try to hold rallies. Kizza Besigye, Museveni’s main opponent since 2001, has been arrested hundreds of times but never convicted of a crime. Some Ugandans cite these political arrests in accusing the security forces of failing to focus on solving murders and other serious crimes.

Between June and September last year at least 20 Ugandan women were killed in the area surrounding the capital, Kampala. Most of those cases have never been solved.

“This business of kidnapping and asking for money, I only used to see it in the movies,” said Dan Katumba, who operates a passenger motorcycle in Kampala. “Now it is happening here in Uganda. Can you believe it?”

Wike to Odufor Youths: Cooperate with Contractors.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has urged the youths of Odufor community to cooperate with the contractor handling the ongoing road project in the area, to ensure timely completion of the project.

Governor Wike who made the appeal, at the official flag off the construction of the Odufor-Akpoku-Umuoye Road in Etche Local Government Area, equally urged the contactor handling the road project, to provide employment opportunities for the youths of the area.

“I want to plead with you to support the contractor, so that the contractor will be able to accomplish and finish this job on time.

“Money will not be a problem by the special grace of God. God has been helping us, we have never lacked and will never lack.

“Our youths continue to support the contractor. Do not molest them, they’re not oil company. They’re not coming here to drill oil. They’re only coming to construct road for us to use.

“And I want the company too to know that, part of what we’re doing is only to create employment for our people.

“There are certain supplies our people are competent to do, and our people should also be employed to work, so that they can find food on their table.

Rivers State Works Commissioner, Mr Dum Dekor said that the 23.3kilometre road has 20 culverts and will provide 550 direct employment opportunities for the people.

He said Odufor-Akpoku-Umuoye Road is a virgin road being constructed from start to finish by the Wike administration.

Batman star dies age 104

Born in 1913, the Batman legend began working at the MGM in 1939 and eventually became Chairman of the Film Selection Committee at the infamous studio.

While there, he helped sign deals for Ben-Hur, Dr. Zhivago, and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The sad news was announced by Melniker’s fellow producer Michael Uslan on Facebook.

He wrote: “It is with such sadness that I tell you of the passing of my Batman partner, the legendary Benjamin Melniker (1913-2018).

“Legendary is the only word capable of describing the man who started work at MGM in late 1939 and came to be known as The MGM Lion for his forcefulness in negotiating the deals for the studio while building his reputation for integrity at the same time.

“It was Ben who taught me, ‘The only thing you get to take with you when you die AND leave behind is your good name.’

Uslan continued: “In 1979, Ben believed in me and in my outlandish idea to buy the rights to Batman in order to show the world the “TRUE” Batman as created in 1939 by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, a creature of the night who stalks disturbed villains in the shadows, in a series of dark and serious movies.

“Ten long years later, thanks to the relentless efforts of Ben, we succeeded, changed the comic book industry, changed the movie industry, and changed history.”

Uslan also described Melniker as a “humble man” who “never wished for attention”.

He added: “He turned down endless requests to write his book or do interviews about The Golden Age of Hollywood, especially in his latter years as he became the last mogul standing from that era

“He told me that he knew all the stories of what transpired behind the curtain at MGM in those decades, but would never reveal things that could negatively impact those people, their children or their grandchildren. Ben was a mensch.”

One fan replied: “Deepest condolences to his family and you, sir. As a Batfan, we owe you both so much.”

Another added: “I will always remember his words: ‘People will never tire of baseball and they will never tire of Batman, and I do not think they will’, RIP.”

Babayaro to return to Chelsea.

Former Nigeria international Celestine Babayaro is set to return to Chelsea in May 2018, more than thirteen years after he bid farewell to the London club.

The Premier League champions wrote on their official website that the triple-trophy-winning class of 1998 will be back playing on the pitch at Stamford Bridge in a charity game against Inter Milan Legends on May 18.

Though the Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medallist was not among the four players listed (Graeme Le Saux, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Wise and Gianluca Vialli), the left-back is in line to feature as he belongs to the class of 1998 that won the treble that calendar year.

Babayaro didn’t feature in the League Cup final vs Middlesbrough in March 1998 due to injury and was also missing from the team that beat Jonathan Akpoborie’s VfB Stuttgart in the final of UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup two months later after failing to recover from the injury he suffered against Tottenham earlier in the season.

The former Anderlecht starlet went the distance in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Super Cup final on August 28, 1998.

Babayaro, who later played for Newcastle United, was Chelsea’s most expensive teenager when he joined the club from Anderlecht in 1997 for a transfer fee of £2.25 million.
