Fayose berates Buhari for Ahmed’s appointment.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose  on Thursday berated  President Muhammadu Buhari over the replacement of the former Director General of National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayo Oke with Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, a northerner.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka,  the Governor said: “The President has further demonstrated to Nigerians that he is an unrepentant sectional leader, who does not care about the feelings of people from other parts of the country.

“With the appointment of Abubakar as the NIA director general, all heads of security agencies are now northerners and the question is: is this what those who ensured federal character in our constitution envisaged?”

“Seeing what President Buhari has turned the country to, the forefathers of Nigeria, who laid the foundation of the country on equity, justice and fairness will be lamenting wherever they are now.

“Ambassador Oke was removed from office the same day Babachir Lawal was removed as Secretary to the Government of the Federation. While Lawal’s replacement came from his home state, Oke’s replacement came from the north. That is unacceptable.”

Fayose, who reminded Nigerians of Buhari’s directive that the World Bank should shift its focus to the northern region, maintained that “because of the President’s nepotism, religious bigotry and favouritism, Nigeria is now more divided than ever before.”He said it remained on record that President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, reportedly said that in his very first meeting with President Buhari, he (Buhari) said specifically that he would like the global bank to shift its focus to the northern region.

“President Buhari has consistently demonstrated that he is an ethnic champion, a religious bigot and the number one promoter of disunity in Nigeria. This he has done again with the appointment of yet another northerner as the NIA Director General.

“Even at a point, the National Chairman of the President’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun had to openly fault the appointments made by the president, saying that as many as three people were appointed from one ward in a local government in the north.

“The implication of what the President has done is that, when security council meeting is held today, apart from one or two insignificant people, those in the meeting will be people from one section of the country.

“Even para-military agencies are headed by people from President Buhari’s section of the country. This is unfair.” Fayose reminded Nigerians of his earlier warnings that President Buhari was operating as a president of the northern Nigeria only and the appointments made by him negated the principle of federal character.

“Those who argued then that the President made the appointments on merit should come to the open to tell Nigerians, especially those from the south that there is no one that merited appointment as director general of NIA. “Those politicians, who painted the picture of a changed President Buhari to Nigerians before the 2015 presidential election must have seen now that he (Buhari) can never change from an ethnic champion to a nationalist,” Fayose said.

Police deploys 4000 officers for Anambra rerun

About 4,300 police officers have been deployed for the Saturday’s Anambra central district rerun election.

This was disclosed by the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Garba Umar, during a press conference in Amawbia.

According to him, there are 1,448 polling units and at least three policemen will man each unit in the local governments involved.

The commissioner sent stern warning to any group nursing any idea that will be contrary to a peaceful exercise to reconsider such ideas or face the wrath of the law.

He equally maintained that there will be restriction of movements in the LGAs involved which he listed to include Awka North, Awka South, Dunukofia, Njikoka, Idemili North, Idemili South and Anaocha.

Part of the statement read, “The Anambra State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the Anambra State Central Senatorial election is scheduled to take place on the 13th January, 2018 at 109 wards of the seven LGAs of the state.

 

“Based on the above, the command wishes to inform the public that there will be restriction of movement within the affected local government areas.”

 

 

“The police and other security agencies are ready to ensure that the electioneering and voting on 13th January, 2018 are conducted smoothly without public disturbance; and assure all political parties, candidates, supporters, including the general public of their safety throughout the period of voting and collation.

 

“Anambra State is known for peaceful conduct of elections; I urge residents to be peaceful and orderly on the election day”.

 

Reminded of a Federal High Court judgment on December 13 which pronounced Chief Obiora Okonkwo the senator of the district, Umar said, “Nobody has served us with any court order stopping the election.

 

“Besides, police don’t conduct elections. INEC conducts elections and the commission has informed us that we should assist them to conduct the January 13 election and we shall do.

 

“If anybody foments any trouble during the election, we shall decisively deal with such person or persons, no matter how highly placed.”

Talking about smartphone battery, there are myths, controversies, facts, practical experiences etc. I have been asked a lot of times, what’s the best way to use your smartphone so the battery perform optimally for years? Well, that question doesn’t have a simple answer. I will debunk some myths, pull up some relevant facts and highlight major do’s and don’t’s. In other words, this will be based on practical experience backed up by few relevant facts. Before we get started, let give you some background information.

Before I became a smartphone enthusiast, I’ve already worked for years on solar energy, inverter and batteries. In fact, I have more than 10 years experience in that field. Maybe that’s why people keep asking me many questions about batteries thinking I know everything. Well, I don’t know everything but I have a lot of experiences to share with you. Having the reputation of destroying several smartphone batteries, I sure do have few do’ s and don’t’s that will interest you.

SMARTPHONE BATTERY – LITHIUM ION OR LITHIUM POLYMER

Like I promised earlier, I won’t bore you with facts. Lithium ion batteries are the older (technology) used in smartphones. They are cylindrical or prismatic cell, which have a rigid metal case. All those older and rigid removable batteries fall into this category. That said, there are still sealed batteries that are lithium-ion. With high energy and low self discharge, it is a very popular and cheaper option but there is are some disadvantages. Lithium polymer battery still uses lithium ion technology but the electrolyte is polymer instead of liquid. Polymer has it’s own advantages as it provides higher specific than any other lithium battery type. The main selling point of the polymer is light weight and flexibility of shape. Smartphone Battery – The Myths!

Seriously, am not going to dwell in the myths so long as I’ll burst most of them in the sections below. Let me highlight some of them

  • Don’t charge your phone while you are using it
  • Don’t charge your phone overnight.
  • Allow your battery to fully discharge before you charge it.
  • Use only out of the box charger to charge your phone or else you damage your battery.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi to save battery

They are many, you can add yours in the comments section. Some of these myths could be true many years back but as battery technology evolved, most of these are truly myths right now!

Practices That Are Dangerous To Smartphone Battery

Having talked about myths, there are real life practices that are capable of damaging your battery.

#1 HEAT – There are several things that can cause that (as we explained later) but you have to avoid it.
#2 EXTREME COLD – This is as bad as heat. Remember if the the chemicals inside the battery freeze, it could completely alter the chemical reactions.

#3 TOTALLY DISCHARGE AND NOT CHARGED IMMEDIATELY – Newer processors can handle this better but it’s still a risk. There are days that your shinny smartphone could run out of juice. At 0%,there are few memory operations running in the background that use the battery power. So make sure there is an opportunity to charge immediately when your phone when it hits 0%. The longer a smartphone turns off at 0%, the more the opportunity of the battery draining to death (permanent damage).

#4 INFERIOR CHARGER AND POOR QUALITY CORDS – Be alert to notice when your phone takes more than normal time to charge. If it is not due to temperatures or running applications, then check the charger/cord. Am not an advocate of use only out of the box charger, I know by experience that inferior charger/cords can damage your battery more than you think.

#5 CONSTANT CHARGING AND DISCHARGING – This is generally inevitable but try to avoid multiple charging and discharging sessions with your smartphone in a day. Having worked with batteries for years, putting any battery through multiple charge/discharge session in a day reduces the life span of such battery. I won’t give you all the scientific reasons for that (which could be boring) but I’ve seen it happen through the years.

The Truth About Battery Saver Applications

This is part of the modern myth or should I call it marketing strategy? A battery saver user Application CANNOT DO ANYTHING MORE THAN YOUR OS IS CAPABLE OF! Don’t fall for the hype. Nevertheless, when given super user/system level access, few of them can add extra juice to battery life. Jail breaking in iOS or Rooting in Android could give that super access to such apps. It’s risky though and most of us don’t need it nowadays. Check out our  Tips and Tricks section.

Do’s & Don’t’s + How to Get The Best Out of Your Smartphone Battery

As I said earlier, I’ve damaged several smartphone batteries and have use many well. This section will be based on practical day to day real life usage and experiences.

USE WI-FI NOT 3G/4G – I’ve heard this before but then I decided to test it out myself. My phone usually gives 6+ hours of screen-on time (SOT) if I use 3G/4G data through out but on Wi-Fi it records 8+ to 9+ SOT. That’s not all! The phone gets warmer with intensive use on 3G/4G but stays cooler on WiFi. This practically suggests that using Wi-Fi more on a smartphone will give you a better life span.

Feel Free To Charge Your Smartphone All Night, It’s Better! –  This has been a major thought or myth as I’ll like to call it. About 10 years ago, inverters were designed to trip off charging when battery is full. Today, there are up to 10 stages of intelligent charging and battery management controlled by micro processors. It’s even better when we talk about smart phone charging. Nowadays, smartphone charging is controlled by very intelligent processors. They stop charging once battery hit 100% maintaining trickle current to keep the battery smiling.

The best time to charge your phone is the time you are not using it. Making overnight charging even a better option.

Charging (especially the common fast charging) heats up your phone. Adding intensive usage (like gaming, video processing etc) while charging is a death path to your phones battery life. I always advise using a smartphone that can carry you a full day and plug it in the night for another day’s action.

Finally on overnight charging, I also noticed from my test that my battery charged overnight lasts longer than the one I unplugged immediately it hit 100%. I recorded  7 hours SOT with 3G/4G and 10+ hours on Wi-Fi after overnight charge. That’s about extra 1 hour screen on time than unplugging immediately it hit 100%. I noticed this years back working on inverter batteries. Won’t go into details explaining this but trickle current adds extra juice as the whole true battery capacity is a little more higher than the ‘100% full’ level which is okay for safety. It’s like bending a gallon to add more liquid after it’s ‘full’.

Avoid Using Apps That Continuously Run On The Background.

The more you have them in your phone, especially the free ones, the more of your battery they consume. I had uninstall Facebook messenger on my Android as it never stays hibernated. Beware of free apps that promise a lot, they take more from your battery than they actually give. From monitoring your preferences, sending data to their server to loading your phone with adware, it tells on the battery on a longer run.

Discontinue Using Your Phone When You Notice It’s Very Hot –  No matter the smartphone you are using, even if you are in the cloud 9 of your favorite game, give your phone 5-10 mins break once it becomes very warm. This also means no HEAVY USE WHILE CHARGING.

Test Your Charger/Cords After Months of Use –  You don’t necessarily need to buy any extra accessories to do this. Several charging current apps can do this. They will tell you if your charger is giving the stipulated charging current. If it’s not, in most cases, the issue is from the cord due to wear and tear. Get another cord else change the charger.

Conclusion

This could sound funny but try not to use a smartphone more than 3 year… 😂 It starts getting boring after that!
Also learn to put your smartphone off! I don’t mean Airplane mode, I mean power off! If you can make it a frequent practice (which is very difficult nowadays) it helps give your phone a longer life span.

Manchester United reportedly joins the race for Sanchez

Sky in Italy are reporting Manchester United want to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal and have made contact with his representatives.

United are thought to be willing to consider involving midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal for the Chile international.

Sources said that United are ready to pay more than Manchester City for Sanchez and would give him a higher wage.

Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Moura were among the names discussed on the latest episode of Transfer Talk according to sources privy to the information.

City already have a financial package in place for Sanchez should he leave Arsenal in the summer when his contract expires.

The potential deal would earn Sanchez £13m a year in wages, with the 29-year-old receiving a £30m signing-on-fee.

City is also reported to have been keen on signing Sanchez but may wait until the summer to avoid upsetting the balance of the squad which boasts a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side made a £60m Deadline Day approach for Sanchez, however, the deal collapsed when Arsenal were unable to sign Thomas Lemar as a replacement from Monaco.

More than 80 refugees are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean after their boat sand off the Libya cost.

 

The inflatable boat was carrying more than 100 people when it went down off the eastern city of Khoms on Tuesday, said Ayub Qasim, a spokesman for Libya’s coastguard. The boat was said to be carrying more than 100 people when it sank close to the city of Khoms on Tuesday, the Libya’s coast guard spokesman said.

 

17 survivors clinging to the boat’s wreckage were found by rescuers, Qasim said. Most of those on the boats came from African countries,” he said.

The UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) describes the Mediterranean Sea as the world’s deadliest border. Last year, 3,116 people died in its waters while trying to cross from North Africa to Europe by sea, the agency said.

Libya, which was plunged into chaos since the 2011 removal of Muammar Gaddafi, has become the most common point of departure for refugees traveling by sea to Europe.

Italy, their main point of entry, is providing naval support to the Libyan coastguard to stem the flow of people.

“Libya’s coastguard is badly equipped and they are blaming the European Union for not providing enough resources to combat this crisis,” our correspondent said. “Officials here also worry that this crisis, if it escalates, could be used for international intervention in Libya.”

Over the weekend, 64 refugees lost their lives off of the coast of Libya in what is believed to be the first Mediterranean shipwreck of 2018.

The boat was carrying 150 people when it set off from the eastern town of Garbouli, according to Italy’s coastguard. Rescuers saved 86 people and recovered eight bodies.

Among the survivors was a three-year-old child who clung to her mother as she drowned, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

“Survivors held on to the wreckage as they waited for a rescue with the bodies of those who didn’t make it, including family members, floating around them,” MSF said in a tweet.

Some 171,635 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea during that period. That figure is roughly a 50 percent drop from the previous year.

Arsenal FC number one goalkeeper, Peter Cech has said that among all the players he played with during his time at chelsea, he enjoyed watching Deco. In an interview with the Arsenal matchday programme, the Chelsea FC former goalkeeper picked out one player above the rest when asked who he most enjoyed watching.

‘At Chelsea I played with so many fantastic players, so to choose one is very hard,’ he said. ‘But one player I did love to watch was Deco.

Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge took part in Liverpool’s training session on Wednesday ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with leaders Manchester City.

Salah, who is the Reds’ top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions this season, has missed the last two matches because of a groin problem.

Sturridge has not been involved in a game since the Champions League victory over Spartak Moscow on Dec. 6 having suffered with illness and injury.

Sport claims the Gunners have approached the player with a view to moving this month amidst the arrival of Philippe Coutinho and the subsequent lack of opportunities the Brazilian will now likely have under Ernesto Valverde.

Buhari Appoints Ahmed Abubakar NIA Chief.

President Mohammed Buhari on Wednesday approved the appointment of Dr Ahmed Abubakar as the the director general of National Intelligence Agency.

This was made known through the special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina. The appointment is with immediate effect.

Dr Ahmed was until his appointment, special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and international relations.

The new DG replaces Ambassador Ayo Oke who as sacked after the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission discovered huge sums of money at Osborne Towers of which NIA had made claims to.

“The new Director Geis Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, a retired career Foreign Service officer, who till his appointment served as Senior Special Assistant to the President (SSAP) on Foreign Affairs/International Relations.

“Abubakar had extensive experience working with the United Nations in peace support operations, mediation process, preventive diplomacy and good offices, as well as the promotion of good governance and respect for the rule of law and human rights.

He also briefly served as Senior Adviser at the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), with headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad, before his appointment as SSAP.

“Abubakar holds a B.A degree in French Language and Literature, and an M.A degree in Francophone Maghrebian Literature, both from Bayero University, Kano. He is also fluent in English and Arabic,” Adesina stated.

Inec Reiterates Readiness For 2019 polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has reiterated its readiness for the conduct of next year’s general elections.

The commission made this known through its National Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Solomon Soyemi.

Reacting to questions on Channels TV’s program “Politics Today”, Mr. Soyemi said that INEC has released the election timeline one year earlier before the general elections so as to ensure a free, fair and credible election.

According to him, this is the first time in history that election timeline is released more than one year before the elections.

The early release of the timeline, he said, is to enable Nigerians to come to terms with electioneering activities.

Furthermore, he added that INEC is planning to register about 80 million voters in the continuous voter’s registration exercise to enable more people to participate in the upcoming general election.

In an earlier televised broadcast, INEC National Chairman, Mohammed Yakubu said that the commission has registered a total number of 68 political parties.

He said that 22 of the registered political parties, including the Socialist Party Of Nigeria, were among the newly registered.

He urged political parties to respect the timeline released by INEC to ensure a peaceful exercise come 2019.
