The Chairman of the Governing Council and Board of Trustees of Pamo University of Medical Science Portharcourt, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has declared that Nigeria will benefit from the institution.
General Abubakar, made the declaration during an interview at the government house in Portharcourt.
He said that the University will help the country to conserve foreign exchange as qualified and highly educated medical doctors will be trained locally and equally offer more Nigerians the opportunity to study medicine, saying that the Board of Trustees will work with the management of the University to make it the best in the country.
Pamo University is the brainchild of the former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili and is the first University of Medical Science in Nigeria.
Rivers State Government has also declared intentions to partner with the new University.
Governor Nyesom Wike said that his government will support the University with a grant of 500 million.
This, he said, is to support the institution and students that will be sponsored by the Rivers State Government as the it will benefit the people of Rivers State.
The governor said that the state and the school will sign a memorandum of understanding to train 100 medical doctors annually.
Also, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed said that with very limited spaces for the training of Medical Doctors in existing institutions, the establishment of Pamo University of Medical Sciences is a welcome boost.
The Minister of State for education, Professor Anthony Onwuka equally said that the University will enjoy federal government’s support.
