Rivers State Government has put plans in motion to construct a flyover at the traffic hotbed Garrison Roundabout.
The project which will be handled Julius Berger will transform the roundabout according to the original plan.
The company has already mobilized to the site as they were seen carrying out evaluation and assessment of the area.
The hasty reconstruction of the roundabout by the Nyesom Wike’s administration had increased traffic build-up at the roundabout instead of reducing it.
The Wike’s administration also came under heavy criticism by residents for abandoning the original plan by the Rotimi Amaechi’s administration which was to build a flyover at the roundabout.
But Wike had during the commissioning the garrison-Trans-Amadi road, in June 2018 stated that garrison needed a flyover.
Governor Wike also promised to build a flyover stressing that the roundabout is not enough to address the huge traffic on it bearing in mind that the popular Aba/Portharcout expressway is such a busy road that connects almost the entire Port-Harcourt City.
Residents had upon the completion of the roundabout, expressed displeasure with the outcome.
Motorists plying the route lambasted the roundabout, saying it was obstructing the free flow of vehicular movement.
A motorist said on July 2018 that: “If we can tell ourselves the truth, we would know that before this roundabout, there was never anything like traffic jam around this junction.
” This roundabout is too large and it is occupying major space, we already know that Port Harcourt drivers are very impatient and everybody wants to move at the same time and this is the major cause of traffic jam.
” There is also the problem of accidents occurring especially from these big trucks.
” We are tired of this continuous traffic at this junction, it is worst in the mornings and evenings because that’s when people are either going to work or coming back.
“Also the traffic lights and timing is not very functional, unlike the ones we have at Waterlines, GRA and other areas.
The commercial drivers also called on the state government to look into the issue and proffer a solution as soon as possible.
“We appreciate the fact that the state government is working, we also know that this is a mistake from those that handle the project, maybe an architectural mistake or whatever.
“But we cannot suffer for it, this problem needs fixing and quick solution”
