President Bola Tinubu on Thursday directed Nigeria’s military and security agencies to take immediate action against illegal mining operations across the country.
During a presentation by Course 32 participants of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja, titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035,” President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that companies involved in mineral exploration prioritize the health and safety of Nigerians and the communities in which they operate.
He emphasized the urgency of curbing illegal mining activities, which are widespread and pose significant challenges to the nation’s security and development.
In his remarks, the President stressed the need for intensified efforts by security agencies to eliminate illegal mining activities, which he described as a threat to the nation’s security and economic stability.
“We have challenges with scavengers and exploiters around the country. We must address this issue urgently, and our military officers are well-positioned to understand and tackle this better than the civil society,” Tinubu stated.
The NDC participants were tasked with exploring key national issues, focusing on how the mining industry could contribute to national security and economic development.
The findings of their 11-month study were presented to President Tinubu by Colonel Olajide Bello, representing the delegation. In response, the President commended their work, highlighting the importance of economic diversification for Nigeria’s future.
“I have listened carefully to your presentation. Beyond your expertise in war and security, I appreciate the intellectual rigor of your work, which will significantly aid our nation.
“The diversification of our economy is a priority, and your involvement will foster a deeper understanding of the issues at hand,” President Tinubu said.
The President also assured the delegation that his administration is committed to completing the NDC headquarters in Abuja.
He emphasized the need to address the health implications of mining activities, particularly for those living near mining areas. “We must focus on health and safety from the beginning by providing medical facilities and other essential services to protect the lives, property, and health of Nigerians,” Tinubu added.
Admiral Olotu noted the ongoing infrastructural upgrades at the NDC, thanks to the President’s support, which has allowed the college to compete globally. However, he appealed for further assistance to complete the institution’s permanent site in Abuja, which has remained unfinished since 2010.
