Bread bakers in Rivers State have warned of another increase in the price of bread beginning from Monday, 21st August 2023.
The bread makers made this known through a statement issued through their umbrella body, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, on Friday.
The statement, which was signed by the association’s chairman, Chidi Orlu, and secretary, Nwaoha Joseph, blamed current market conditions in the country for the new increase of bread prices by fifteen percent.
According to the statement, the wholesale price of 1.5 kg of a loaf of bread, known as jumbo, will now be sold for N1,250 while the 750 gram-sliced loaf will be sold for N630.
Also, the round cake bread, which was previously sold for N180 at the wholesale price, will now be sold for N210, while Keke, six in one, and the big loaf will also attract higher prices from Monday.
There are fears that with the increase in the wholesale prices of bread, their retail prices will also skyrocket, with consumers at the receiving end.
The statement called on consumers to bear with bread makers who he said are struggling to meet up with the rising cost of production.
TPCN recalls that this will be the third time that prices of bread will be increased this year.
The development has severally been attributed to the increasing cost of flour and other materials used in the production of bread.
