The Rivers State Police Command has reacted to the trending news on some social media platforms that five female students of Rivers State University, faculty of humanities located in Ahoada town, Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state, were raped by hoodlums in the wee hours of Monday 15 May 2023.
The spokesperson for the Command, SP Grace Iringe Koko, said when she got information on the trending news, she contacted the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of RSU Ahoada campus, Dr Dominic Evanson, who told her no incident of such happened in the campus.
SP Koko further disclosed that the police had not received any report of such an incident from any individual or group.
The President of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the institution, Comrade Anele Miracle, who spoke to our Correspondent in a telephone interview, said he had not received any report of such from the campus students.
Comrade Miracle explained that if any such incident occurs, his office will be the first point of complain l.
Through investigations, our Correspondent gathered that one Onyema Egbe and some persons, mainly from Ahoada, posted the alleged rape of the students on their Facebook wall and other social media platforms.
A native of Ahoada town, when contacted, a native of Ahoada town who was the first person that post the incident on his Facebook wall, claimed the incident happened outside the campus in a place dominated by students of Rivers State University in Ahoada town.
He alleged further that the students are afraid to speak up or report to the police for fear of reprisal attack by the hoodlums suspected to be cultists.
In his reaction, Human Rights Advocate, Prince Wiro, said he had gotten in touch with the police, and they confirmed that nothing of such happened, based on the feedback obtained from the RSU Ahoada campus internal security.
He urged persons who claimed to be aware of the rape incident to encourage the alleged victims to report the matter to the Police or human rights group that will ensure justice is served.
The human rights advocate called on the police, traditional rulers and the school management to ensure adequate security for students within and outside the campus, considering the level of high insecurity in Ahoada town and it’s environs in recent times.
