Ogonis under the aegis of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People have written the federal government, requesting 25% oil profit before the government can resume oil exploration in the area.
This recent move came after several failed attempts by the federal government to resume oil exploration in Ogoni land.
The traditional rulers of the Ogoni ethnic nationality in Rivers State had previously warned that any planned resumption of oil exploration in the area through the back door will be resisted.
The monarchs had also called on the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company to approach the stakeholders in the area if it wants to resume oil exploration in Ogoni land.
You recall that a group known as the Ogoni Liberation Initiative once led the NPDC to Ogoni land in a move to resume oil exploration in the area.
But, the President, the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, Godwin Gininwa, in a statement disowned the group, saying the group was not representing the entire Ogoni people.
In an interview with our correspondent, one of those laying claim to the MOSOP presidency, Fegalo Nsuke said a letter has been sent to the federal government, requesting 25% revenue from the oil profit before any exploration can commence.
He said, “the 25% will be used to fund the Ogoni Development Authority as contained in the letter sent to the federal government.
“The fund will be used to address critical infrastructures that will attract private investors to the area.
“The Ogoni Development Authority will operate independently outside the control of MOSOP or any individual or group.
“There are dire needs for security, healthcare, education, employment and other critical sectors and those are what the 25% oil profit will address.”
The Ogonis further assured the federal government that no persons or groups in Ogoni will resist the resumption of oil exploration in the area if the government implements the request in the letter.
